The Lost Mines - Chpt. 13: Old Friends & The Lost Mines
General Summary
Tarsahk 24th, 1486; Morning
Following breakfast, the group set out back for Phandalin on what could be considered a generally nice day for early spring. With the goblins and orc killed or run off from Cragmaw, the south road has been pretty safe over the last week or so. Tarsahk 27th, 1486; Early Afternoon
The group, after a pretty easy two day and a half days travel (along with relatively nice weather), arrived in Phandalin. The group split up, Bludgarm going to see Sister Garaele, Bree & “Mister” going to check in with Sildar and Gundren. Bludgarm was able to find Sister Garaele at her home, though she was a bit bruised. Apparently a group of hobgoblins returned while she and others were at Cragmaw surveying the beginning the removal of the shrine. The hobgoblins were led by one named Targor Bloodsword. There was a bit of fighting, however, both sides realized it did not need to continue. Sister Garaele was able to talk with Targor Bloodsword. An agreement was had and both parties moved on their way. “Mister” and Bree, having split off from Bludgarm, went to check in with Sildar. They found him at the town hall, talked with him for a bit, of which Harbek's death came up. Sildar gave the group his condolences, but stated that Harbek's death was not in vain. “Mister” asked where Gundren was, which Sildar directed them to Stonehill Inn. Tarsahk 27th, 1486; Afternoon
The group met back up at Stonehill Inn. They found Gundren, who quickly realized that something was wrong when Harbek was not with them. The group recounted their adventures in Thundertree, the twig blights, the giant spiders. They told of the cultists, specifically Favric and his treachery with the Green Dragon, Venomfang. Gundren seemed quite disheartened and sad at this news, to which “Mister” reinforced that Harbek died a most valiant and noble death. As well, “Mister” swore that they would track down Favric and Venomfang and kill them both. After a while and some drinks, Gundren asked the group if they could head to Wave Echo Cave post-haste. Neither of his brothers had been seen in nearly two weeks which was totally unexpected. Tarsahk 27th, 1486; Late Afternoon
The group arrived at Wave Echo Cave, to which they slowly proceeded inside, unsure what awaited them. Upon entering, they found the cavern where the Rockseeker brothers had been making camp. Amongst the supplies, was Tharden’s body. Nundro was nowhere to be found. After a few minutes canvasing the rest of the cavern, “Mister” went out with Gundren to help him bury Tharden. Once done, T Gundren gave “Mister” the boots of striding and springing that were originally Thardens. Back in the cave, the group looked over the crevasse at the north end of the cavern, which the Rockseeker brothers had mined out. Leaving Gundren to hold down the camp, the party headed down the Eastward tunnel. Tarsahk 27th, 1486; Early Evening
The party made their way to what appears to be the old entrance to the mine; long since collapsed in the spell battle. Along the walls are carvings and reliefs of dwarven and gnome miners. The group lit a number of brass lanterns and brazers in the area, upon which they were attacked by 10 stirges. After a couple maneuvers and teamwork, the stirges we're quickly killed. The group then inspected the Old Guard Room and the Assayer's Office. In the Old Guard Room, the party was beset upon by 9 undead skeletons. These skeletons gave the group a hell of a fight, however the party was able to eventually wipe them out. As for the Assayer's Office, that was a more peaceful room. The group inspected the bodies there, finding them to be just normal bodies. Rummaging thru the tattered papers in the cubbies on the wall, Bludgarm was able to make out what appeared to be weigh-ins and payouts to miners. The group also found an old dwarven strong chest. Tarsahk 27th, 1486; Evening
Pressing onward, the party continued Eastward, only to find a huge cavern with large stalagmites and the floor carpeted in fungi, puffballs and other manner of stalk fungus. “Mister” quickly found out, after “popping” a puffball, that it was quite dangerous, leading him to be poisoned for upwards of 10 minutes. And taking a significant amount of damage to his lungs as well. Bree was able to make it across, however, Bludgarm and Anders had another idea. Having “Mister” toss a barrel of oil in towards the center of the room and then him and Bree back out of the cavern as much as possible, Bludgarm and Anders backed way down to the mouth of the Entranceway and Bludgarm set off a fireball in the cavern. Not the best idea he has ever had, but effective. Bludgarms fireball effectively neutralized much of the carpet fungus, however, it caused one hell of a fireball (the poison gas being flammable and all) and along with it, a cacophonous thunderboom. The result: an extremely pungent, burnt odor smelling of sulfur and brimstone.
