Phandalin

Lying at the end of a rutted track emerging from the wooded hillside and nestled in the rocky foothills of the snow-capped Sword Mountains, is the mining town of Phandalin. Once a thriving town of humans, dwarves and gnomes, now lies all but forty or fifty new buildings amongst crumbling stone ruins cover in ivy. Centuries ago Phandalin was a hub. A main stop on the trek between Neverwinter and Triboar. It's mines famous for the magical works of both dwarf and gnome alike. So famous, that centuries ago, an Orc horde thought they might take the mines for themselves. A battle raged, destroying both the town and the fabled mines, forever. However, in the last several years, some hearty folk from both Neverwinter and Triboar have attempted to reclaim the ruins of Phandalin. Fur traders, woodworkers, farmers and prospectors have come, hoping to reclaim the land, make a name for themselves and seek out fabled riches.   Phandalin’s residents are quiet, hard-working folk who came from distant cities to eke out a life amid the harsh wilderness. They are farmers, stonecutters, blacksmiths, traders, prospectors, and children. The town has no walls and no garrison, but most of the adults keep weapons within easy reach in case the need for arms should arise. Visitors are welcome here, particularly if they have coin to spend or news to share.   Several months ago, three dwarf brothers found the fable lost mines. It brought upon them the eye of those who would use it for nefarious purposes. Unfortunately one of the brothers lost his life in the early days of those events. However, thru the fates of Lady Tymora or maybe even thru the actions of Bahamut himself, a group of hired travelers who owed these people nothing, took it upon themselves to set right the wrongs being perpetrated upon this fledgling town. Since then, those once begotten travelers have taken up residence, restoring old Tresendar Manor. As you can imagine, they are something of a local hero now. The two dwarf brothers, along with the heros, have worked to restore the Old, Once Lost Mines, and as such they are nearing their formal open in just a few short weeks!   As you can imagine, word of the famous mines reopening has spread like wildfire. People from all around have come to town. Some to hear stories of what happened, some to open shop in a soon-to-be bustling town, others looking for work at the mines; either collecting ore or offering their magical services. And yet others have come to stake out a claim. A claim on a piece of land, hoping to find their own riches & to perhaps find their own “old lost mines”.   You find yourself at a modest two story road house. What's the name? You take a swig of ale and think for a moment... The smell of fresh hewn wood and hearty stew permeate the air. Then it comes to you - "Stonehill Inn". A sturdy name, fit for a sturdy town. This is where our story begins.

Government

Phandalin had no functioning government per se, but the townsfolk annually elect a "townsmaster". The townsmaster serves as judge and mediator, as well as a keeper of records for the town and surrounding areas.

History

Phandalin was originally a farming community. However, when the orcs of the realm of Uruth Ukrypt had destroyed all game in their realm, they went in search of food and turned on the human settlements in the area, raiding them. Phandalin was one of these settlements, and in 951 DR, it was overrun and then abandoned.
