Danish Mercia
Danish Mercia is the largest portion of the old Kingdom of Mercia that was seeded the Danes in King Alfred's peace. Danish settlers now occupy the land taken from Mercian's who fled or died in the fighting. The Danes call the land "the Five Boroughs" for the five fortified towns created by the Danes surrounded by fortified wooden walls: Nottingham, Darby, Leicester, Stamford, and Lincoln.
Each of these Five Boroughs is ruled by its own Jarl who controls lands around the fortified burh, which served as the center of their political power. Each Jarldom is independent and operates separately but have agreed to support one another in case of attack.
The downside of each borough's independence is that many small raids are launched into neighboring Kingdoms with little regard for the overall peace. Each Jarl cares little for breaking the peace and Mercia is not strong enough to defend itself from all five enemies. Little to be done to defend against them without a strong sword and courage.
