The Custodians Local 72 is a union of custodians who work on the Variance space station. This collection of custodial and janitorial workers specializes in the cleanup of large accidents, mishaps, and spills. This can include major garbage and waste backups, large-scale leaks, or simple clean-up duty where junk and debris are cleared and removed from the requested area. The group itself is considered a union, where the rights of each member are protected during and after jobs.
However, the union is also run as a business allowing for the members to not only protect their rights but to share work opportunities together without the need for freelancing or competing against each other. The Custodians Local 72 in this manner are run as a General Partnership, which gives all members equal share to profit and liability. This has been done so that each member is encouraged to seek the same level of involvement, effort, and responsibility in the company/union and its activities. Including any potential downfalls if the company is discovered conducted any sort of malpractice.
Unfortunately, the union is not quite as innocent as it may seem on the surface. While they have always done a stellar job with conducting their business and cleaning all sorts of various spills and clearing debris from accidents and the like they have hidden a key factor from the public of the Variance space station. Which is that they are in fact the ones causing many of the accidents that lead to their services being required.
Years ago, the custodial union realized that work had slowed and that the Variance space station was seemingly conducting much of its own cleaning duties. Or at least preventing major incidents from happening, which was slowing down work significantly and causing a massive loss in profits. The union, being a General Partnership, meant that everyone in the union was suffering financial losses.
So, as a 'fix', the custodians decided to start 'encouraging' spills and accidents to occur around the station, to allow them to work more and bring in much-needed profits. These started off as small-time issues, a knocked-over display, a sabotaged leaky pipe, etc. But as those jobs weren't bringing in a lot of money, and were more work in sabotaging than in actual cleaning services required to fix them afterwards. Because of this, the sabotaging began to escalate, and soon, these custodians became a roaming band of troublemakers, secretly destroying and causing messes on a larger and larger scale.
Today, they frequently sabotage waste disposal vehicles, causing them to crash and spread garbage and debris everywhere. They have caused the major malfunctioning of several main water lines, which required long water shut-offs and extensive cleaning and repair to resolve. In general, they try and cause any sort of mid to large-scale mess-related chaos across the station, all in secret.
Their methods are extremely unscrupulous but it has brought in more work and money than they have ever had before. So, despite the shady business methods, they continue on with their practices. But some within the union are starting to believe they've gone too far, and that they should wind down these practices before they are caught.
The Custodians Local 72 of the Variance space station is a collection of janitors and custodial workers who specialize in the cleaning of large-scale accidents and messes. They are not only a union which seeks to protect its worker's rights but a General Partnership business where all members share profit and liability in the company.
Their secret is that many of the major accidents that occur on the station that are cleaned by them are also caused by them. They have become a secret cabal of troublemakers that go around and sabotage things to specifically cause a large mess that they can then be hired to clean up.
