Accelerated Mortal Fade

Accelerated Mortal Fade is a rare fatal human neurological condition that is thought to bear some relation to the affliction of true Fade that occasionally affects the Fey. Accelerated Mortal Fade only affects members of the Ajan Lapset, the human descendants of interbreeding between Fey and humanity.

Causes

The precise cause of the condition is unknown but it certainly has a heavy genetic component, since it has only ever been observed amongst members of the Ajan Lapset. It is theorised that possession of the "golden gene" of the Fey is a necessary prerequiste for the development of the disease, which always strikes in late adolescence or early adulthood. Some other environmental trigger is thought to act as a catalyst for the development of the disease but there is insufficient data to be certain.

Symptoms

Those who suffer from Accelerated Mortal Fade run a high fever and exhibit a characteristic red facial rash which looks something like a web or net. They report symptoms of abnormal anxiety, lucid dreaming and an excessively detailed recollection of dormant memories. As the condition progresses, they may become irrational and lose the awareness of their true place in space and time. This is called the untethering. Eventually the patient refuses food and water and grows weak and incoherent. Usually this leads to a rapid death, and only in exceptional cases have some very few victims escaped to begin a long and painful recovery.

Affected Groups

The disease affects only a tiny minority of those who are members of the Ajan Lapset, and only in late adolescence or early adulthood. Many of the Ajan Lapset may be unaware of their genetic inheritence and become so only at the tragic point when they develop symptoms of Accelerated Mortal Fade.
