Bistrelle
The Bistrelle are a related family of species of large furry lagomorpha native to Noctaliya, with different variants found on Sunside and Moonside. They spread into the Discontinuum in some long forgotten age and can now be found throughout the Twilight Realms and in other realms.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bistrelle are quadripedal mammals with long rear legs that can fold almost flat, extending with a spring to give them a fast loping run. Their relatively small forelegs can be used to some limited extent for the manipulation of objects between the articulated claws of their paws. Their broad flat teeth serve to gnaw at wood and other tough vegetation, whilst long sensitive ears and wide sensitive eyes make them well suited to life in the forests of the Twilight Realms.
Their heads are crowned with short keratin horns, two for the females and an additional third horn in the centre of the forehead of the males.
Ecology and Habitats
Bistrelle are creatures of forest and undergrowth, making their homes in burrows which they dig in soft soil, in and around tree roots. They live in small colonies of roughly ten to twenty individuals. The excavations of old and large colonies sometimes undermines the trees they live beneath.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Bistrelle are herbivores, capable of digesting a wide variety of tough plant material, sometimes including the bark of trees but more typically they prefer softer vegetation.

Uses, Products & Exploitation
Bistrelle are a favorite prey species of the Owlblood of Noctaliya. In modern times, direct hunting is not necessary for survival, but it is still a popular activity, particularly on Moonside. On Sunside there is less hunting but there are Bistrelle farms where they are reared and slaughtered for their meat. Owlblood value meat from farms less highly than prey they kill themselves, but as their civilisation has developed they have recognised that they cannot support their population from hunting alone.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Bistrelle were introduced to Magicians' End by the Owlblood of Quarowl when the Noctaliyan Gate was open and can now be found throughout the northern woodlands of Tinturbean.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
The fur colour of different subspecies varies according to the locale where they live. On Moonside it is predominantly black, but it can also be pale grey or even white.
