The Noctaliyan Gate
The Noctaliyan Gate was a portal between the realms of Magicians' End and Noctaliya which was opened in the city of Quarowl by the psychotic mage Zemdath the Terrible in the year 3011 APC.
For over three hundred years, the Noctaliyan Gate provided a swift and secure route between the two otherwise distant realms. It allowed Owlblood migrants at first to live and work in Magicians' End and then later to settle in and around Quarowl, establishing a ghetto by the end of the 31st century, and expanding into the rest of the city over the following two centuries.
The Noctaliyan Gate was ultimately destroyed on the first day of the insurrection known as the Ruffling of the Feathers on 19th Tuzlle, 3387 APC.
Purpose / Function
The gate was created from Magicians' End in the city of Quarowl to allow the Owlblood of Noctaliya to travel freely into the realm. This was specifically in order to provide Zemdath Romuth (aka Zemdath the Terrible), the criminal psychopathic mage who had taken control of the city, with a personal body guard and the nucleus of a military force with which he could enforce his rule. The Quarowl High Guard were founded shortly after the opening of the gate and regularly reinforced from Moonside.
From the late 31st century until its destruction, the Noctaliyan Gate allowed commerce between Magicians' End and Noctaliya to flourish, with phryne and saranjum being the most popular exports, providing the Owlblood of Noctaliya with tasty alternatives to grelk which were greatly enjoyed. Tharan and noctaliyan diamonds were imports from Noctaliya which both found favour on Magicians' End.
History
The construction of interdimensional portals into the Discontinuum had always been viewed with concern by arcane adepts on Magicians' End, after the history of the Sundering, reinforced by the events of the Planar Conformation. It was widely recognised that permanent portals were potentially destabalising, risking a corruption of the local laws of form. Unwilling to take chances with further increasing the chaotic disturbances that had followed from the intrusion of the Dark Domains, the Society of Arcane Adepts had prohibited mages from even attempting to create them. It was at least partly due to their failure to enforce this policy, when the Green Eye was built in secret in the late 24th century APC, that the Moderators' Council had come to power in the first place. So it was particularly shocking, yet somehow inevitable that after the fall of the Moderators' Council, one of the first things unshackled mages might seek to do, was to dabble in portal magic. It should have been no surprise that Zemdath the Terrible, would be the first to break the old rule, when he made the Noctaliyan Gate.
