Jäätynyt Ovi
Jäätynyt Ovi, the fortress of the Frozen Door is the second of the great castles that guard the routes into the heartlands of the Fey Court. It stands at the northern limit of the lands the fey now control, keeping watch over the frozen wastes they ceded to the Frost Giants in the Isotherm treaty that brought an end to the Second Frost War.
Purpose / Function
Jäätynyt Ovi is primarily an ancient defensive fortress, built to keep watch over the lands to the north, but there has been no fighting here since the Age of the First Wars.
In more recent times, the fortress has gained a new role, becoming the most important site within the Court of the Fey for the practice of the ancient Rituals of Changing. The warden of the castle, Shailyn Jää, is the supreme mistress of the art. Changing, is a mechanism for transfer between realms which was discovered by the fey, long ages before the Stability Council even existed. It relies on the establishment of a spiritual balance between a source and target realm, where the energy required to break down the barriers is minimised if two living souls can be swapped. This is much easier than sending one Agent across the barriers but it has a somewhat unethical flavour when the subject of the swap is involuntarily selected.
Changes induced between infants for this purpose gave rise to the stories of Changlings, which are common in all the realms that touch the Court of the Fey.
