Summer Camp 2023
There is always someone who arrives late at the camp. They haven't done their homework, their shoelaces are undone, their pocket handkerchief is crumpled and their backpack is stuffed with all the wrong kinds of items for camping, but there they are, struggling up the dusty road in the heat, not wanting to be left behind.
So here I am! I haven't done any preparation. I've only just about skimmed the rules. But I have enjoyed reading some of my fellow anvilites articles and I'm going to make a late bid to see if I can get over the line with minimal qualification for bronze. Edit: It's actually called copper not bronze, demonstrating how little attention I've paid to the rules!
In my defence, I haven't been neglecting world building recently. On the contrary, I've been working on a long running project with a fairly regular drip feed of edits since April. The aim is to complete a write up for the entire aproximately 18,000 year history of Magicians' End which is one of the evolutions in the Discontinuum where I wanted to flesh out the past to lend colour and meaning to four snippets of foreground stories and art that already existed but in a relatively isolated way. Once it got underway I realised there was just so much I wanted to say and it has become a more significant slice of world building than I originally envisaged, prompting five continental maps, three timelines (so far) including my largest ever, an ever growing "summary" article to hold it all together and a whole series of detailed articles hanging off that one about the organisations, people, places and events that have made Magicians' End the complex, interesting (hopefully!) and imperilled world that it is today. Already I can tell I won't finish this month and I've stopped setting myself deadlines as long as I keep making progress. I'm about 14,000 years into the 18,000 years needed, but the most recent 4,000 are going to require some more in depth analysis to balance out the history so there is no immediate end in sight.
With all this in mind, I didn't pledge to summer camp because I felt I already had so much on my plate and I really wanted to keep focusing on completing the history. But then when I've seen how much fun everyone else is having and I realised that quite a few of my articles already weren't that far from matching the requirements of summer camp content, I just couldn't resist signing up.
Hopefully there's room on the camp grounds for one more very late arrival, puffing and panting up the road and searching around frantically to see if he can rearrange the contents of his backpack to find enough things to pitch a late tent at the camp.
Now, what were you saying about this lonely mountain place?
