The Great Impartial Court
The Great Impartial Court was the successor to the Grey Kings as the arbitor of law in Anoomenon and beyond. After the tragic end of the reign of Berick Manderson a faction of the city oligarchs, who had been plotting to take more power, saw their chance to overthrow the Grey Kings and impose their own government. Since Anoomenon was the greatest power of the age, they were assuming control not only of the city but of a network of trading deals and a military alliance that gave them influence throughout the world.
The institution of the Great Impartial Court took power in 2530 AF and historians usually consider this to be the end of the Golden Age of Anoomenon, although the Long Northern Peace, when Anoomenon could still claim preeminence and could enforce its laws over wide swaiths of land and sea, undisputed, continued until 2617 AF and the start of the Role Disputes.
The Court was disolved in 2837 AF, after a little over three hundred years, being replaced by a relatively short lived democracy. By this time, the power of Anoomenon had waned and the Court only controlled a fraction of the wealth and influence it had wielded during the Long Northern Peace.
History
The coup which brought the Great Impartial Court into power was not without controversy and although relatively peaceful there was some violence and opinion within the city was sharply divided for many years after.
The famous playwright Taldyne Zinthrano, who was active in the later years of the Grey Kings and afterwards, was said to have remarked that the court was neither great nor impartial, although his criticism was usually muted and discrete because some of the judges at the court were also his patrons. He overstepped the mark with his history play "King Manderson", first perfomed in 2553 AF, which aired some more frank criticism of the change of power and that was why he spent his final years in exile at Blyperrin.
