The Vow of Earth
The Vow of Earth was a binding agreement between the Guardians Of Earth and the Galactic Compact undertaken immediately before the start of the Season Of Innocence.
It is not known exactly why the Vow of Earth was taken, nor even whether it was an initiative from the Guardians of Earth or the Galactic Compact. It is widely believed that an environmental catastrophe affecting the biosphere and the geophysical state of the Earth played some part in the decision, but even amongst those who adhere to this theory there are competing ideas about whether it was caused by war, long term mismanagement or a sudden disastrous accident. An equally popular explanation suggests that the Guardians were seeking to atone for some sin committed against the Compact in a distant part of the galaxy, or that the Vow was actually a punishment from the Galactic Compact, imposed rather than agreed upon.
Information about the Vow is curiously hard to obtain from the Galactic Compact in modern times. The species that are now in contact with Earth claim that they were not party to its terms and offer only blandly evasive replies or profess ignorance themselves when questioned.
