Erestrian Spiders
Erestrian Spiders are, as the name suggests, Spiders from Erestria. These spiders, however, are quite different from a typical Spider.
Erestrian Spiders, for the most part, are typically just particularly large Spiders, around three feet long and two feet tall on average, scrounging around, and eating mid sized animals such as rabbits and birds, and sometimes using nets. They also prey on larger animals, if gotten the chance, Auris children often falling prey to these beasts. Sometimes, even Humans are eaten, adult ones, too, if they're small enough. Typically they are wrapped in web then brought back. Some Humans are even brought back alive, only to be killed when they are noticed.
Brought back to where? As the name suggests, Erestrian Spiders live exclusively in Erestria, specifically the Northern Erestrian mountains. Vast crevices with absurd amounts of web suggest that Erestrian Spiders predate even Neiandithals, but it is impossible to confirm. It is wild speculation, but it is magnificent.
To reproduce, Erestrian Spiders do something quite strange. Instead of reproducing with males of the species, the Erestrian Spiders have evolved something know as the Erestrian Spider Queen, creatures that greatly resemble Humanoids on the top half and spiders on the bottom half. These creatures are typically wanderers, and seduce Human males in secluded areas, before retreating and laying their eggs.
These Erestrian Spider Queens can also be domesticated, and can become Humanized fairly easily. This happens naturally, occasionally, with an Erestrian Spider Queen, instead of reproducing with a man, following him around and learning from him. This leads to them typically adopting a fairly masculine personality (with adjustments for genetics, obviously). Other times, Humans, stop them from leaving, and teach them how to be Humanoid, often because of a foolish love or just a morbid curiousity.
These Erestrian Spider Queens often blend in with Human society, and although never reproducing, still make up a small chunk of northern Erestrian Human population.
Many adventurers head to the mountains to loot the unfortunate souls that got caught by the spiders, and they come away with significant loot. It is considered quite dishonorable, for obvious reasons, but pays well enough that many outsiders do it without heed for any local norms.
Elves have had stories about the spiders for centuries, and many local legends revolve around resisting the tempations of the Spider Mistress, often drawing similarities between the Spider Mistress and the Human Spirit, and how one must resist the forces of kindness, happiness, and goodness of both in order to maintain a holy spirit and stay untainted.
Most Elves refer to the Erestrian Spider Queens as "Srallicks", which is just an adapted plural of Srallick, the original name of the Spider Mistress.
With the spiders themselves, the Elves regard them as an infection to be purged, similar to how they view Humans. Strange people, Elves are.
Basic Information
Anatomy
These people have the legs, and below-waist body of a Spider but a torso and above body of a Human.
The actual Spiders are simply large Spiders.
Genetics and Reproduction
These creatures lay around 50 eggs, each a proper spider. Around one out of 100 eggs are Spider Queens.
Growth Rate & Stages
These creatures start as cannabalistic savage spiders and eventually leave their cocoons of birth by ripping it open and they begin to hunt.
Spider Queens are groomed and cared for by the other Spider Queens, and taught how to be properly Spiderlike and how not to fall into Human temptation of merging with their society.
Ecology and Habitats
These creatures are only located in the Erestrian Northern Mountains, perhaps being purged everywhere else by the Goblins and Purrs, but this is only speculation.
Dietary Needs and Habits
These creatures are carnivores.
