Naming Traditions

Family names

The Oskuwan naming traditions reflect their reverence for nature and their belief in the importance of individual attributes. Owaian names are broken into three different names. The given name, the "attribute" name (known as the suyan name in Oskuwan tongue) and the family name.    Given names among the Oskuwans often reflect qualities of character, personal aspirations, or even aspects of the natural world that resonate with them. These names are carefully chosen by parents or bestowed upon individuals through spiritual ceremonies. They may be drawn from the Owai's rich oral traditions or inspired by the elements of their environment.
