Session Forty-Four: A Shade in the Wind

General Summary

The session begins with Nyx and Galrik finishing their drinks at the Old Skull Inn. During their discussion with the bartender, they discovered Weregund owned a shop in Shadowdale. Nyx and Galrik head over to Weregund’s shop where Nyx picks the lock to the shop’s door. Nyx and Galrik check the street to make sure they are unobserved before entering. Inside the shop they find general supplies in the front of the shop and a large counter covering the rear of the shop. Galrik begins searching the front shelves while Nyx collects some of the pricier merchandise. Galrik notices on the bottom corner shelf there appears to be a hidden door. Galrik tugs on the door ripping it open. A glass vial falls from the door shattering causing a blue gas to fill the area. Galrik ignore the gas as his attention is caught by a chest hidden in a small compartment behind the door. Galrik reaches in to grab the chest as he his lungs begin to burn from the gas. Determined to get the chest and find out what the contents are Galrik remains in the gas. As the seconds tick by Galrik’s lungs burn as he begins to feel weaker. Galrik tries to force open the chest but struggles. Nyx notices what is happening to Galrik and knows Galrik is being affected by cloud kill. Nyx summons a gust of wind to move the cloud away from Galrik as Galrik forces the chest open causing gold coins to fly out of the chest. Nyx leaves Galrik to collect the coins as she turns her attention to the back of the shop. Nyx discovers a door leading up to a second floor living quarters. Nyx makes entry into the living quarters. While searching the quarters, Nyx discovers a note from Weregund to his wife telling her to leave Shadowdale and move her family away from Waterdeep as something big is planned. Nyx pockets the note and a few other things before heading back downstairs.
  Nyx and Galrik depart Weregund’s shop and head towards Twisted Tower of Ashaba where the ruler of Shadowdale, Lord Mourngrym Amcathra, resides. They approach the front of the tower and are stopped by two guards. Nyx inquiries about an audience with Lord Amcathra, but the guards tell her Lord Amcathra is not seeing any one. Nyx and Galrik leave to see if they can find another entry into the tower when they are stopped by a female voice calling out to them. They stop as the woman approaches them. The woman introduces herself as Lady Shaerl Amcathra and asks for Nyx’s and Galrik’s help. She tells them Lucas with the resistance spoke of the exploits and she witnessed them killing the Zhentarian soldiers. Lady Amcathra states Lord Amcathra is not himself and will not associate with her and secluded himself in his sitting chamber. The only people who had an audience with the Zhentarian leadership. Lady Amcathra is convinced Lord Amcathra is under some type of influence or being threatened as he would never allow the Zhentarian in Shadowdale without a fight. Lady Amcathra tells Nyx she can try to get them in to see Lord Amcathra but devises a plan to disguise herself as Captain Ramular to gain an audience. Lady Amcathra escorts Nyx and Galrik into the tower and they make their way to Lord Amcathra’s sitting chamber. Nyx approaches the guards in front of the doors and demand an audience. One of the guards enters the chamber and a short time later exits chamber telling Nyx Lord Amcathra will see them.
  Nyx and Galrik enter the chamber. Lord Amcathra believing Nyx disguise demands the meaning of the audience. Nyx tells Lord Amcathra she had captured one of the persons responsible for the recent attack. Lord Amcathra focuses his attention on Galrik and starts to interrogate Galrik. Lord Amcathra get upset as Galrik makes a mockery of the line of questioning. During the interrogation, Nyx was successful in detecting the thoughts of Lord Amcathra and discovered a secondary voice replying to Galrik. Nyx sensing Lord Amcathra was possessed by something secretly sends a message to Valna to come to the tower as Valna has the ability to dismiss creatures. Nyx attempts to stall for time as Lord Amcathra grows tired of Galrik bravado and demands Nyx bring Galrik to his interrogation chamber. As time run out there is a knock on the door. Lord Amcathra turns is attention towards the door as one of the guards escorts Valna into the chamber. Valna tried to bluff by stating she was just arriving in town looking for her friends when the guards escorted her to the tower. Lord Amcathra reacted violently towards Valna howling she is a liar as he lept up to attack her. Nyx casted dimension anchor on Lord Amcathra as Valna used Tranquility to banish the creature possessing Lord Amcathra. With a blast of white light, the shadow creature exits Lord Amcathra and attacks. Lord Amcathra falls to the ground unconscious. The shadow creature rakes its claws at Valna as Valna hits it with a daylight spell. The shadow creature recoils from the light as Galrik and Nyx attack it. The shadow creature tries to defend itself but it soon is destroyed slowly dissolving into black goo. Nyx consults with Glorr and finds out the shadow creature was a vessel of a shade prince named Prince Yder Tanthul.
  Valna helps care for Lord Amcathra as he slowly regains consciousness. Lady Amcathra enters the chamber with the guards and moves towards Lord Amcathra. Lord Amcathra remarks he is embarrassed as to what transpired. He proclaimed he let his beloved Daleslands down. Lady Amcathra tells Lord Amcathra how Nyx, Galrik and Valna help get rid of the creature possessing him. Lord Amcathra expressed his gratitude and Galrik ask to have a title bestowed on him. Lord Amcathra agreed he needed alies like Galrik and proclaimed him Duke of Peldan’s Helm. Valna stays to help Lord Amcathra as Nyx and Galrik leave to inspect the wagons Nyx spotted earlier.
  Nyx and Galrik arrive at the location and find the wagons gone expect for one which had a broken wheel and was abandoned. Nyx checks over the wagon and determines it is safe. There are several crates which Galrik and Nyx open. They discover finely crafted weapons and armor by Steam and Steel a weaponsmith based out of Waterdeep. In the other crate they find several magical items bearing the mark of Friac. Nyx and Galrik stash the crates and regroup with Valna to decided where they need to investigate next.
