Session Four: The Past Returns!
General Summary
The session started with the party traveling to Morrell Manor where Maxeene told the party she dropped off Davil Starsong and Ziraj. The party decide to let Nyx scope out Morrell Manor to determine the best entry points. Cora, Valna and Cannella decide to head to the market place to give Nyx the time she needs. As they were travelling to the market place, Cora, Valna and Cannella noticed they were being followed by a gnome wearing a black cloak trying to stay in the shadows. Cora and Valna decide to go into Fran’s Glorious Wears while Cannella goes to investigate the gnome.
As Cannella goes to approach the gnome, the gnome notices he was discovered and runs to the alley. As the gnome hits the alleyway he leaps into the shadows and disappears. Cannella enters the alleyway and travels the length of the alley to see if he could locate the mysterious gnome. Thinking the gnome was hiding somewhere in the alley, Cannella calls out to the gnome but gets no response. After a few minutes Cannella gives up searching and returns to Fran’s Glorious Wears to report what happened with the gnome to Cora and Valna.
Inside Fran’s Glorious Wears, Cora and Valna were met with a cold shoulder from Fran as they looked as those whom would not shop at her store and lacked the funds to do so. Cora, not finding what she wanted, asks Fran if she had anything which would meet her needs for clothing showing her she had gold to spend. After seeing Cora had plenty of gold and a generous budget, Fran took Valna and Cora to the back of the shop where she keeps her higher end clothing. As Cora was shopping, Fran looked on in disgust at the constant bantering by Valna. Asking if Cora wanted Valna removed so she could shop in peace, Cora declined prompting Valna to offer Fran a budget of gold to purchase herself some new clothes as well. After trying on and getting two new outfits, Cannella approaches Cora and Valna to tell them he had lost the gnome. Deciding there is not much more they can do, Cora, Valna and Cannella return back to Nyx to see what she had discovered.
After watching the Morrell Manor for about an hour, Nyx determined the best course of entry is on the south side where there is cover near the fence. There were three points of entry, the backdoor, one of windows on the ground floor and a roof access. She determined they have approximately ten minutes before the city guards came around during their rounds of the ward. While scouting the manor, Nyx saw a small gnome appear out of the shadows and enter the manor. Cora, Valna and Cannella met back with Nyx and they fill each other in on what they found. The party decides it would best to infiltrate the manor during the cloak of darkness.
The party travel back to the marketplace to kill some time. Valna, being stressed, decided to enter a small pet shop to play with some animals while Cora, Valna and Cannella enter Lar’s Magical Goods and Potions. Looking around Nyx saw some invisibility potions which may come in handy. Nyx determine the cost was too much for them to afford and swipes two of them off the shelf without being caught. After looking around some more, Cora, Nyx and Cannella decide to leave and go to collect Valna.
As darkness falls on Waterdeep, the party returns back to Morrell Manor. Deciding to take the roof approach Nyx and Cannella fly over the fence while Cora and Iris climb the fence with ease. Valna tries to climb the fence, but puts her weight on a weak branch of ivory which snaps causing her to fall off the fence and on to the ground. Swearing under her breath at falling again trying to climb an obstacle, Nyx flies back over and picks her up. Worrying about being discovered, Nyx has Cora, Iris and Valna go into her familiar’s pocket while she and Cannella fly up to the roof.
Up on the roof, Nyx and Cannella find a hatch which leads into the attic. Nyx checks the hatch and determines it is safe. She releases Cora, Iris and Valna from her pocket and the party makes their way into the manor. Inside the attic, it looked like someone hastily stored furniture throughout the attic space. The furniture had sheets of cloths thrown over them. The party spread out and began to search the attic. In one of the armoires, Cora discovered the bodies of an older gentleman and a woman. Both had their throats slit. A quick check of the gentleman, Cora found a signet ring of a family crest. As the party finished up searching the attic, Valna felt a sense of evil and a force trying to compulse her. Fighting it off she hears in her head someone which sounds like an old friend she thought was dead taunting her. Valna turns to the party to express her concern when Cora has a sense she wants to go downstairs. Cora turns to head down the stairs at the end of the room once Nyx clears the door. As Cora gets to the door, Nyx intercepts her and tries to sway her but Cora really wants to go downstairs to see something. Nyx pulls Cora in her familiar pocket with her familiar to keep Cora safe as they try to proceed down in the manor safely. Cannella decided to try to focus his energy and try to sense any destroyers in the area and he was able to feel three of them.
The party proceeds down the stairs and end up in a hallway with two rooms on both sides. The hall ends in a balcony where it looks like stairs go down. Nyx decide to let Cora out to see if she came to her senses and after a brief time in the pocket she was able to shake off the compulsion. As the party was standing in the hall, the shadows start to appear and slowly the lamps on the walls grew dim. Nyx casted light as Cora lit her staff. The party decided to check out the room to the left as the voice continued to mock Valna.
Inside the bedroom they found another male deceased in his bed. It looked like he was unnaturally aged as his face was contorted in a state of fright. As the party searched, they noticed they could not see outside as the darkness seemed to encompass the manor. The party was finishing up searching the room when they heard footsteps approach them. The footsteps stopped at the doorway and they see a man in a butler outfit. His eyes are rolled back in his head and he tells the party his master awaits their company. The party decided to follow the man downstairs into the basement.
Earlier in the day Sneachta arrived to Waterdeep seeking out Volo as the woman in his dreams told him he would need to help the one who holds the answer. The woman tells Sneachta time is getting short and they now know who they are. She reveals herself to be Mystra and tells Sneachta she may not be able to commune with him anymore. As Sneachta was making his way to the Yawning Portal, he was jumped by a group of men with serpent tattoos. Sneachta was captured and brought to the Morrell Manor. There Sneachta was shackled to a table and tortured by Davil Starsong and Ziraj. A man in a half mask kept telling Davil he must have some knowledge of Valna as Mystra spoke to this one. They kept torturing him asking him where Valna hid the key and what Valna knows. Sneachta remained silent as anger grew in him. He did not know what they wanted but he knew he was going to kill them. Ziraj looking down at Sneachta smiled cruelly as he hacked off Sneachta’s horn telling him he would end him soon but was interrupted by Davil stating they had arrived and Barley would bring her to them. He overheard Barley tell Davil he was close to her once and he made himself as someone else to see if he could commune with her father. Valna was not bright but it seems something was there protecting her. He was not going to waste this opportunity. Davil told Barley he sacrificed a lot to set this up and he better be right. A short period of time later, Nyx, Cora, Iris, Valna and Cannella appear in the basement.
As the party enters the basement they are greeted by Davil, Ziraj and Barley. Valna is stunned to see Barley as she thought she had accidently killed him many years ago. Barley mocked Valna as being weak and naïve. Davil stepped forward and address the party tell them that he would pay Cora, Nyx and Cannella a 1,000 gold pieces if they turn Valna over to them. Valna stunned at the offer pleaded with the party not to accept the offer from Davil as she did not know anything about a key they were seeking. The party turned Davil down as Sneachta broke his binds and jumps on Ziraj surprising him. Sneachta takes Ziraj down to the ground and starts to pulverize him as the other jump into the fray. The party gains the upper hand and an injured Barley disappears into the shadows making an escape. The party beats on Ziraj as Sneachta gets in the killing blow causing blast of light as Ziraj turned to ash. The party turns their attention to Davil as he drinks a potion and was able to fast heal from the blows from the party. The party wore down Davil and Valna dealt a killing blow. The energy blast from Davil turning to ash knocked out Valna.
While unconscious Valna remembered some childhood memories of her father and the moments after her father’s death. She vaguely remembers her father saying she was the key to it but does not know anything more about a key. Valna slowly regains conscious as the party looks to find Barley. Unable to locate Barley the group turns their attention to Sneachta. Sneachta tells the party he was here looking to help and wants to meet Volo. The party agrees and decides to look around the manor to see if they could locate any information. As the party was searching, they notice the city watch had gathered at the manor’s front gates and were forcing them open. Nyx gathered Valna, Cora and Cannella into her familiar pocket while handing Sneachta potion of invisibility. Nyx and Sneachta make their way past the city watch unseen and head back to the Trollskull Manor.
Upon the party’s arrival, they found a note on the door from Renaer seeking an audience with Valna. After a brief discussion, the party agrees Valna should talk to Renaer. Valna sends a magical message to Renaer telling him she is available to talk. A short time later Renaer arrives at the Trollskull Manor. Valna and Renaer head to the private study while the rest of the party have a celebratory drink made by Lif who seems to pour the perfect drink. Renaer tells Valna he finally knows why she looks familiar. Valna’s father, Reaghan Urthadar, was a steward to Renaer’s father, Lord Dagult Neverember, and was responsible for the Norwind Estate. Renaer stated Reaghan was an honorable man and was good friends with Renaer’s mother, Quithana. Renaer was staying at the Norwind Estate during the summer month with his mother when he was twelve and one night Reaghan approached him. Renaer remembers the night because Reaghan had a serious look to him. He told Renaer his is a fine young lad and he wanted to entrust him with a special item from his family. He gave Renaer a necklace which had the night stars on it. He told Renaer there will be a time when he would know it is right to give it to his daughter, Valna. Renaer did not immediately recognize Valna when he first met her but it became clear when he thought about how she looked when she was younger. Renaer gives Valna the necklace and tells her he hopes it will help her out. Valna questions Renaer if he thinks his father was responsible for Reaghan’s assassination. Renaer doesn’t rule it out but stated his father tries to do good even though he has done some questionable things. He remembers his father was concern about something around Reaghan’s death but was not sure as it was never disclosed to him. Renaer bids Valna a farewell and retires to his home. Valna goes up to the roof top and looks up to the night sky. She sees the star of Mystra high in the sky and lines up the necklace with the stars. After lining up the necklace with the stars, the necklace opens and a key falls out. Valna looks at the key and notices a lion’s head with the number 24 on it. She takes it downstairs and fills the rest of the party in what she found out. They give the key to Nyx to hold for safe keeping and retire for the night.
The next morning the party is awaken by a knock on the door. A human male with a lazy eye introduces himself as Justyn Rassk and he is the guild representative for the Guild of the Butchers. He was here to talk to the party on what the Butchers Guild could do for the party. After discussing the finer details of a contract with the Guild, Justyn agrees to bring a sample by and if the party is happy then they will pay the Guild twenty-five gold pieces a month and pay him five gold pieces a week on the delivery day. Justyn leaves and the party decided to visit Volo to see if he knows anything about the key.
The party finds Volo at the Yawning Portal and asks him about the key. He tells the party the key is to one of the vaults at the Sword Coast Traders' Bank. He tells him he has a friend which works at the bank by the name of James Lighthouse and he should help them. Sneachta asks Volo if he needs any help and Volo tells him he is good for now and offers Sneachta an autographed book with Sneachta refuses. Volo tells Sneachta to return and he would have something for him. Cora shows Volo the signet ring she found and Volo tells Cora it belongs to Maxwell Morrell and there is news he was killed along with his wife and son. The Morrells were a minor noble family which owned some shops in Waterdeep. He inquires why she had it and she tells Volo she found it and was looking to return it. The party leaves Volo and travel to the Sword Coast Traders' Bank.
At the Sword Coast Traders' Bank, Valna asks for James. They are waiting awhile when they over hear one of the clerks say James is drunk again. The party demand to see James and they are escorted back to his office. Nyx cast cure on James which brings him out of his drunken state. Mad at the party’s intrusion, he demands why they are there. They tell James Volo sent them because he may be able to assist them. Valna shows James the key and stated she wants access to the vault. James reluctantly agrees to take to the vault and Valna pleads with Nyx to go with her. After agree to go with Valna, James takes Valna and Nyx to the vault while the rest of the party waits. Sneachta, getting bored, takes some of James's Dragonfire ale and shares some with Cannella.
At the vault, Valna opens the vault door and enters with Nyx. In the center of the vault is a small wooden crate. Inside the crate is a small box about the size of a jewelry box. After Nyx made sure it was safe to open Valna opens the box. She was able to pull out a note with a map with a small ledger. After flipping through the ledger which appeared to be blank Valna looked at the map. She discovered the map is able to track any protectors or destroyers by concentrating on it. She thinks it may only work with those she may know of. She was able to detect Barley was out at sea. After looking at the map she reads the note which is from her father telling her to seek out Tranquility, Dark Blade of Justice. It will assist her as she is now the key holder and will have the power to find those who seek to destroy the Realms. The note tells her to find the Shadowed Catacombs where Tranquility is at. Nyx and Valna rejoin the party. The party returns back to the Trollskull Manor to find a delivery of fresh cuts of meats. As the party was discussion what to do next the Manor is rattled by an explosion. They party exit the manor to find what looked like a fireball detonated across the street.

- The Serpent's Eye also had a cargo of exotic animals bound to a buyer named Zardoz.
- Davil has a room at the Yawning Portal.
- Davil and Ziraj were destroyers.
- Barley, thought to have died many years ago, has returned and he wants Valna as she holds the key of locating destroyers and protectors.
- Valna found a key to a vault at the Sword Coast Traders' Bank which contained a blank ledger book, a note from her father and Ao's map.
- Ao's map, when concentrated on shows the location of the known protectors and destroyers.
- Valna's father left the location of their family's relic, Tranquility, Dark Blade of Justice, which is in the Shadowed Catacomb.
