Wondrous Items, Rarity Varies

Ioun Stones are small magical crystals that float around a users head. They grant a range of enhancements and effects to the user.

Description

They are small glowing crystals that come in varying shapes, sizes and colours. They gently float and orbit a users head at a distance of up to three feet. Unattended Ioun stones would tend to gently float in place.
They would glow when in use, and if the stone has an activated function, it would emit a musical note similar to a harp when used.

Functions

A variety of Ioun stones exist, each granting different effects. Their rarity corresponds to their strength and difficulty to make.

• Absorption (Very Rare). While this pale lavender ellipsoid orbits your head, you can use your reaction to cancel a spell of 4th level or lower cast by a creature you can see and targeting only you. Once the stone has canceled 20 levels of spells, it burns out and turns dull gray, losing its magic.
• Agility (Very Rare). Your Dexterity score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this deep red sphere orbits your head.
• Awareness (Rare). You can't be surprised while this dark blue rhomboid orbits your head.
• Fortitude (Very Rare). Your Constitution score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this pink rhomboid orbits your head.
• Greater Absorption (Legendary). While this marbled lavender and green ellipsoid orbits your head, you can use your reaction to cancel a spell of 8th level or lower cast by a creature you can see and targeting only you. Once the stone has canceled 50 levels of spells, it burns out and turns dull gray, losing its magic.
• Insight (Very Rare). Your Wisdom score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this incandescent blue sphere orbits your head.
• Intellect (Very Rare). Your Intelligence score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this marbled scarlet and blue sphere orbits your head.
• Leadership (Very Rare). Your Charisma score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this marbled pink and green sphere orbits your head.
• Mastery (Legendary). Your proficiency bonus increases by 1 while this pale green prism orbits your head.
• Protection (Rare). You gain a +1 bonus to AC while this dusty rose prism orbits your head.
• Regeneration (Legendary). You regain 15 hit points at the end of each hour this pearly white spindle orbits your head, provided that you have at least 1 hit point.
• Reserve (Rare). This vibrant purple prism stores spells cast into it, holding them until you use them. The stone can store up to 3 levels worth of spells at a time. Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 3rd level into the stone by touching it as the spell is cast. While this stone orbits your head, you can cast any spell stored in it, expending the spell.
• Strength (Very Rare). Your Strength score increases by 2, to a maximum of 20, while this pale blue rhomboid orbits your head.
• Sustenance (Rare). You don't need to eat or drink while this clear spindle orbits your head.

History

It is believed that a wizard under the tutelage of Ioun, The Knowing Mistress first created the Ioun Stones around -3000 MR. Throughout the course of their lifetime they made around two dozen stones and left behind knowledge on how to create them.
It wasn't until much later that arcanists begun to replicate the creation of these stones. Requiring perfect gemstones, they were expensive and difficult to make which made them rare. Most wizards capable of creating them kept those they made to themselves, and when found they were worth tens of thousands of gold.
Between -1500 and -1000 MR, numerous stones were either bought or stolen and subsequently went missing. This was apparently linked to a mass acquisition by Larloch, the Shadow King.
More Ioun Stones were created during the The Arcane Epoch, some made with imperfect gemstones. These had some kind of debilitating effect on the user in addition to its beneficial properties.
After The Cataclysm, the creation of Ioun Stones has ceased.

Ish Stone

In Forthal, a new type of stone has been invented by Lord Ish Dolvar inspired by the original Ioun Stone designs.
These stones require a delicate process of imbuing small amounts of Arambarium into near-perfect gemstones. In 189 MR, this technology was distributed to arcane practitioners and artificers in Arcantris Dominion.
