Bloodmoon Graveyard

Red Sands, Taken Lands

Written by Endrise

Is it macabre to hide in an area probably full of dead people? Yes. But it at least keeps most visitors from looking too close at our operations.
— Elisabeth Saltfroid VII
The Bloodmoon Graveyard was once the battleground where the Great Sangfroid Empire fought against Regimare. An area of sea home to countless shipwrecks, it now forms the home for many pirates as well, including the Crescent Captain herself, Elisabeth Saltfroid VII.

General Information

Found not far north from the Siren Islands, the Bloodmoon Graveyard is a collection of sandbanks and shallow waters away from regular trade routes.

Over the years, ships and shipwrecks drifted into these banks and became stuck, piling up around them. Thanks to the Day of the Red Sea, dozens got stuck here at once, forming a graveyard of rotting wood and decaying ships. A grim reminder of a failed battle.

Submerged Graveyard

Most shipwrecks visible above the waters are only the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the waves, hundreds more rest amidst coral reefs and sandbanks. A graveyard of countless souls, accumalated over untold years of sinking ships around it.

The result is a vast field of ships from all across the Crescent Sea, piled on top one another. This makes the waters harder to navigate, as larger ships would rub against the wrecks and tear open their hulls. As such, only smaller vessels can safely travel here.

Piracy & Privacy

Thanks to the shallow waters, larger ships do not travel these areas much. Trade routes either go around the graveyard or ignore it entirely, making it not visited by many.

This makes it instead an ideal hiding spot for pirates across the Crescent Sea. Over time, these people gathered to seek sanctuary and created a community. Their combined strength helped a port emerge, providing a haven for all piracy.

Besides common pirates, the fabled Crescent Captain also makes her home here. Elisabeth Saltfroid VII and the Crust Crew dock their ship from time to time, ruling the yard for years by now. Thanks to the Crusty Sailor’s crustacean companion, they have very little worry about their massive vessel ever getting stuck. As such, their reign remains unchallenged.

History

Great Sangfroid War

During the end of the Great Sangfroid War, Caesar Sangfroid sought to invade Inselreich by all means necessary. To do so, he gathered a large fleet of the last men willing to fight, heading straight to the Siren Islands. In retaliation, the Sirens fought back against the invasion.

With the home advantage, the Sirens kept the fleet at bay until the heavy artillery came down. Caesar was taking ground as they speak until the sea itself stirred with rage. From its depths rose Regimare, angered by the battle above her.

The sea goddess set her gaze upon the Great Sangfroid Empire, bringing down ships by herself. Wreckages sunk to the depths, taking all aboard with them. The Kaiser fought back, cannon fire breaking down Regimare’s scales as she ravaged the fleet.

By the end, she retreated to mend her own wounds, but Caesar’s fleet gained too many losses. He called back the last of his men, admitting defeat and cancelling the invasion. Ever since, the Day of the Red Sea became a date of Inselreich’s Victory, and Sangfroid’s humiliation.

Claimed by Pirates

If you want to claim these banks for yourself, you can go ahead and ask Jeremy if he's willing to give up his new sleeping spot.
Mind you, he does not like people disturbing his beauty sleep.
— Elisabeth Saltfroid III

Over time, the shipwrecks piled up and washed onto the banks, forming the foundation of the Bloodmoon Graveyard. The isolation of Inselreich helped leave it unbothered for years to come, letting the seas take it. Unaware sailors would add to the pile, often during stormy weather.

Somewhere down the line did pirates began using it as a hideout. They took the planks and built onto the sandbank a base of operations, big enough to support their smaller vessels and hide from the trade routes. Over time, more pirates discovered it and joined in turning the graveyard into a safe haven. Some even claim it is where the Crescent Captain title originated from.

Elisabeth Saltfroid III later down its history claimed the graveyard as the Crust Crew's hideout. The mobility of the Crusty Sailor allowed her ship to dock there with ease, offering more direct firepower against those who opposed the Saltfroid bloodline.

Ever since, the family ruled the small region of sea under the Crescent Captain title.

Sunken Treasures

People often go diving within these waters for a quick buck. Even centuries later, valuable weapons lie on the bottom worth something for collectors of Sangfroid’s history.

Even some Merfolk and other aquatic races attempt to occasionally loot the place. However, it does make for some rivalry between groups there over who gets to keep it.
