Sandworm

Sandworms, sometimes spelled sandwyrms, or just called wyrms, (not to be confused with the actual wyrm) are a creature that reside in the desert.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sandworm's main body consists of a long, ringed body (similar to a common earthworm) with spikes protruding from four lines across their entire body. Their skin is rough, and to the uninitiated, almost feels like rough-cut stone. In proximity to their mouth are four spikes with leathery fins, and they can open and close these fins at will, similar to the hood of a snake or cobra. Sandworms have six rows of razor-sharp teeth, visible when they open their mouths, which otherwise are tiny, almost unnoticable orifices. They possess no eyes, ears, or noses, and rely on sensing vibrations on the surface of the sand, in order to catch prey.

Genetics and Reproduction

Sandworms reproduce sexually, and lay eggs, rather than giving live birth.

Growth Rate & Stages

Sandworms seem to never stop growing, shedding skin much like a snake. It is unknown if there is an upper limit to their length.

Ecology and Habitats

Sandworms live exclusively in the desert.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sandworms eat anything and everything they can find, and in rare cases, may target sand dragons.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Sandworms' shed skin is extremely durable, and can be used as shelter from incoming sandstorms. It is commonly found lying around the desert, and is usually mistaken as a large rock formation.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Desert areas. Saehirus is a notable habitat.

Average Intelligence

Lower than human.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

  • Sand Swimming: Sandworms can burrow and move through sand as easily as if it was water. They can hold their breath a very long time, and may stay under the sand for hours.
  • Vibration Detection: Sandworms can sense the slightest movement or vibration on the surface of the sand while they are underneath it. This helps them attack prey from underneath.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Most sandworms are varying shades of tan or brown, although black and red sandworms are not unheard of. In between the rows of small spikes lining their body, there is usually some kind of stripe or pattern; it is theorized that this is for camouflage.
