16 Courtrey Street

History

16 Courtrey Street is a four-store townhouse in Cl. Arimea Vicary in Larfleur. The house was originally owned by the Earl 'Courtrey, who owned most of the street. The townhouse was split into four apartments and used to host the Earl's retinue when he came to Larfleur to sit in the Senate.   The 16 Courtrey St. apartments were bought in 206 PT by the Leysford Wine and Cheese Company, whose owners moved into the apartments shortly afterwards. The Leysford Company was an artisanal cheese and wine merchants who owned a store in Branter Street in Cl. Calaus' Vicary. The Company was owned by a pair of couples, the Bolgates of Commorunda and the Polwicks of Kernew.   Argelius and Fisenia Bolgate and Tedcun and Neryna Polwick had all been students at the University of Larfleur together, where they had formed their business.   Argelius and Fisenia occupied the top apartment, with a view out onto the city. Tedcun and Neryna lived on the second floor, which had balconies all around the edge of the building. The first floor was occupied by a kitchen, drawing room, and private dining space. The ground floor was dedicated to a salon and drawing room, which were used by the Earl 'Courtrey for hosting guests of when he stayed in the city. The couples used the ground floor for hosting their business partners as well as for other social functions.   16 Courtrey Street had a small garden and tiled courtyard. However, Neryna soon had the tiles ripped up and replaced by local flowers and tree saplings.   Argelius was an antiquarian by training and lawyer by practice, well connected with Larfleur’s high society. Argelius spent most of his time either at home, at the Membringdon Clubhouse, at the Court of Justice Library, or at the Bongravis Palazzo.   Fisenia was a historian by training and was able to put up most of the capital behind the Leysford Company and had the controlling share, although she spent most of her time studying reports from overseas expeditions. Fisenia spent most of her time at the Nomaidian Club, the Branter Street shop, the Academy of Land Science, and the Society Institute.   Tedcun was a theologian by training but was employed by the city government as an advisor. Tedcun spent most of his time at home, on Leystry Parade, at the Old Wall Hotel, and at the Board of Imperial Affairs.   Neryna was a botanist by training and was employed by the Board of Water as a Commissioner on Public Water. She spent most of her time at home, at the University Arboretum, at the gymnasium, and at the Water Board.   In 208 PT, the Polgates commissioned a large black-wood table for their salon as well as several special casks to bottle their finest wines for long-term storage. In 209 PT, Tedcun spent his savings on a fresco (The God of the Sea Gives A Lamb Unto the Earth) and a statue (Lensterius, Governor of the East) that were installed at the bottom of the main stairwell in 16 Courtrey Street.   The Polgates conducted significant renovation work on 16 Coutrey St during their time there, having a larger cellar installed for wine storage. Parts of the Salon were converted into bureau space to allow them all to work from home.
