The Kingdom of Sheora

The Kingdom of Sheora lies in the northern half of the Sheoran Continent. Its climate is mostly cold, only getting a few months of green a year. It's currently at war with its southern neighbor, Eskijan.   Sheora is the oldest kingdom in this region of The Mortal Plane by a wide margin, having been founded at the start of the Modern Era (year 1) and marking the first of the modern kingdoms and countries to exist. It gathered together most of the humans who remained on this plane after the forgotten events that led to those early years, and thus to many, Sheora is the only constant in the world, having existed since the earliest well-documented parts of history. Its power structure has remained monarchical since then, with an unbroken line of kings and absolute rulers ever since.   Historically, the extreme weather as well as the crown's protection of the Sheoran people has kept revolts uncommon. As its population has grown and the kingdom has expanded, though, discontent has begun to ferment in some of the populace, and its laws have only grown more draconian to compensate. Its current ruler, King Ancel IV, along with his predecessor, cracked down on practice of faiths and worship outside of the empire-approved, intentionally modified worship of Iela, the goddess of cold and winter. Pockets of the original cult of Iela remain, along with those who worship her more traditionally, but since the gods have not been heard from in at least a century outside of unverifiable individual encounters and circumstantial evidence, many within Sheora no longer believe them to be material enough for worship to matter outside of how it serves the empire.   Sheora is vast in comparison to most other countries, and thus the roads between villages and towns tend to be much longer and less well-guarded. Monsters and bandits are almost always threats during travel, and towns almost always maintain a strong guard against external threats. Locally, most towns large enough to be considered by the crown are ruled by king-appointed Lord Mayors who report directly to the king himself, usually appointed as a political favor or due to relation to the royal family.   The cuisine of Sheora generally consists of hardy root vegetables and the meat of game or locally-raised livestock, with only herbs that grow locally and little of the flavor or chilis or citrus present in warmer regions to the south. Fortunately, the cold climate means that food keeps in cellars quite well, and thus a smaller overall harvest yield is still able to feed a population for a long while.
