Eskijan
Eskijan (ess-kih-jahn) is a recently-democratic state, formerly a part of Estil. Tension between the more populous areas in the north and the nobility/throne in the south led to The Separation of Eskijan; due to a majority of the military forces - recruited from the general populace, as military service is mandatory upon reaching adulthood - supporting a transition to democracy, the prior nobility and monarch were forced to accept the separation peacefully as a compromise to maintain some level of control.
Following the separation, various popular military leaders rose to power in the new representative democracy, with the populations of each city with a population of 5,000 or more electing a representative to the Eskijan Assembly. Populism remained the primary driving force of the new government. Though the government originally split into political parties due to disagreements, aggression from The Kingdom of Sheora led to the rise of the Eskijan Defense Coalition, a group of loosely-allied politicians who pledged to defend Eskijan's sovereignty against foreign invaders. As the conflict escalated towards The War of Justification due to incursion by Sheora, the EDC, made up by mostly ex-military officers, rallied the general population, causing opposition parties to quickly lose popularity and leading to Eskijan's current de facto one party system.
