The Voices
During The Crossing, some of the passengers who were faithful to an Old World deity, found a new patron in The Voices. When these worshipers would pray for deliverance from the terrors of The Plague Sea their god would not answer, but The Voices would. The Voices demanded extreme sacrifices for their beneficence. At first the passengers resisted the demands of The Voices, but finally one gave in and sacrificed their life for The Voices. And the terrors the Plague Sea threw at them lessened for a time. When the monsters of the deep renewed their assault on humanity, another sacrifice was made. This cycle continued until landfall was made in the Bright Lands. After the landing, the worship of The Voices was formalized into the Church of the Crossing.

Tenets of Faith
To be worthy of divine intercedence, a supplicant must be willing to sacrifice. Whether that sacrifice is money, property, livestock, blood, or even ones own life, depends upon the gravity of ones request of The Voices.
The priests of the Crossing hold that the Voices are in fact the deities of the old world reaching out to protect and guide their human worshipers. And the sacrifices are required to grant them a conduit into the bright lands from their far off home.
