Flynn Ryder

Flynn Ryder was the suave figurehead of the Blackguard, and the mastermind behind the 8-step plan to take over Granting and reveal the corruption within its leaders, securing the position of power for himself.

The Vigilantes did not meet Flynn in person until they'd already completed a handful of missions on behalf of the Blackguard, then talked their way into a personal meeting with the insistence that they bore sensitive information. He took a pretty hands-off approach with the assignments he gave the Vigilantes, mostly just telling them "idk figure it out" or deferring them to Simon for orders.

Over time, Flynn began to distrust the Vigilantes, initially refusing to meet with them in person, sending an Astral Projection of himself in his stead. Despite the mistrust, the party followed through on his plan to occupy Granting and Flynn rose to power within the city.

Ever paranoid, Flynn soon accused Ragnar of undermining his power and challenged him to a symbolic battle for power over the city. Ragnar organized a festival, complete with a parade and fighting tournament, in which the pair would duel, the winner taking symbolic control over Granting and the loser conceding it.

In the days before the tournament, through a complicated series of events which involved a mage-cannoneer-interview-candidate dead under suspicious circumstances (Heimdall: "ask him about the boar!"), a Phantom in a clocktower, and a cult with primarily animal code names, the Vigilantes discovered that Flynn was behind the plot to cripple the Queen Anne's Revenge, and (failing that) an attempt to infiltrate the airship's squad of arcane cannoneers, presumably to take it down from the inside.

Practicing unusual levels of patience, Ragnar and the Vigilantes opt to stay undercover for the few days until the tournament, using Nevermore's expertise to cover the hints that they'd discovered Flynn's betrayals.

On the day of the festival, during their bout of the tournament, Ragnar and Flynn strutted all alpha-male like around each other for awhile. Ragnar turned to address the assembled crowd, accusing Flynn of treason - Flynn denied the claims, but Nevermore began passing flyers around the crowd detailing his transgressions. Infuriated, and out of the blue, Flynn cast Psychic Scream, which Vanessa was unable to Counterspell, but which Ragnar withstood without flinching. Instead of retaliating, Ragnar stood his ground and reiterated that they could have worked together. Stunned that Ragnar was unaffected by such a powerful spell, Flynn froze; seizing the opportunity, Ragnar ended the traitor's life with three quick strikes - one to the knee to bring him down, a pommel to the chin to expose his throat, and a powerful strike to the neck to behead him.
