Velkaa

The artifact which Fenfritz Swiftcog constructed upon commission from Jalan Kendith. Jalan approached Fritz twice with a proposition to create this artifact for him; the first which she outright refused on the basis of it being far beyond her level of skill, and the second which she only accepted at the promise of dedicated help from the Wizards' Enchanting Guild of Stalwartz and "10 Outstanding Favors in Perpetuity" from Jalan to herself.

PROPERTIES

This artifact seems to prefer to take on the form of an ornate bracelet on the wrist of the wielder, with an inlay for a gem.

Mechanically, Velkaa functions very similarly to the Quicksilver Clay which it was fashioned out of. It can take the shape of anything the wielder imagines, within the limits of the item's mass, but with the imbued phantasmium and altered enchantment it can solidify into usable renditions of these items. Anything created in this manner functions as a +2 version of the item mimicked. The only known limitation of this thus far is that it cannot take on the form of a weapon with either of the "heavy" or "two-handed" properties.

Velkaa also has some fledgling form of sentience. It will sometimes turn into an item before the wearer consciously thinks to tell it to do so. This was exemplified by Fritz in the construction of Velkaa itself, when she absently reached for a tool to insert a screw into the mechanism she was working on, only to realize after she'd successfully done so that the tool she was holding was not hers at all, but rather Velkaa in the form of the tool she had been intending to grab.

This sentience gets more accurate and uncanny the more time Velkaa spends with its wielder. A new wielder may experience unexpected and undesired transformations by Velkaa as the artifact attempts to learn the intentions and desires of its wielder, and such transformations will get more accurate and eerily precognizant the longer the artifact remains attuned to its wielder. It seems, therefore, that Fritz has unwittingly invented machine learning.

The physical mechanical properties of Velkaa are fairly nebulous, but there is an exhaustion mechanic of sorts. If used an indeterminate amount of times too many in a period of time, Velkaa becomes unable to be anything other than its passive bracelet form until a long rest has passed. There was also - upon its conception - the insinuation that this exhaustion mechanic may extend to the wearer themselves if the artifact is strained too far.

NAMING

Velkaa is Gnomish for "indebted," a jab by Fritz at Jalan for both his propensity for burying himself in debt, and his newfound indebtedness to her for her cooperation in this project.

Manufacturing process

This is a unique one-of-a-kind artifact, whose construction required immense cooperation between an adept tinker and a team of magicians. This particular specimen was constructed over the course of a week, at the cost of the listed materials, the infusion of Karma by Fritz, and the temporary exhaustion and impaired mental state of the craftsmen involved in the project, who were afforded no breaks and worked tirelessly through the entire week. The Quicksilver Clay which served as the base of this artifact absorbed the full four full ingots of phantasmium infused into it, though - defying all known laws of physics - it maintained the mass and size of a single ingot of the metal.
