Desert Sands II: A Pathless Waste

General Summary

After the sandstorm and discovering that Mercy was gone, Riven became fixated on tracking the wayward camel. She scanned the horizon and found prints and a depression dragged across the sand. Kegho, Ükhilflin and Riven set off following the trail and finding bits and pieces of things that had fallen from the camel during her flight through the storm. They marked way points with torches. They found the keg of water at the end of the long drag mark, but Mercy–and her now much lighter–tracks were nowhere to be seen. They decided to return to the party with Kegho pushing the water barrel and Riven systematically searching the sand to find any dropped trinkets. She founds bits of rope, gold and food.

On Kegho and Riven’s return, La Compagnia agreed to move in the general direction of the Adza oasis as quickly as possible given Theo’s deteriorating health and Teleptyon’s failing kidney. The party marched North/North-East with Kegho periodically calling for Mercy and Alex pointing the best direction he could ascertain from her replies. At the end of a day of forced marching, Teleptyon and Theo collapsed from exhaustion and slept soundly. Kegho and Riven trekked out into the wilderness again but in the expanse of dunes became lost. When they did not return for an hour the rest of the party built a smoky fire to provide a guidepost, by which they were able to return.

As they set up camp it became clear that there would be rain in the desert. Teleptyon and the barbarians began digging trenches and creating a raised area to avoid being washed out while Riven and Alexandru sought firewood to stay warm. They found a tree and began gathering and chopping wood, but this attracted the attention of a band of dogmen.

The dogmen rushed Alex and Riven, but Alex set down his lantern and slipped into the shadows. One struck at Riven and she screamed, attracting the attention of Ükhilflin, who rushed to help. A second grabbed Riven by the ankle and began dragging her away, but she was able to twist and slip her foot away, regaining her freedom. Asbjørn and Kegho also came running. Teleptyon, finally well rested, launched a bolt of pure Ar at one. Another was terrified by the display and flees. A gnoll runs to strike Riven, but the blow is glancing. Alex slipped from the shadows and stabbed a dogman, killing it, which infuriated its partner. Riven strikes out with both daggers but only scratched her target. Teleptyon pummeled another with magic missile. Asbjørn charged one. Ukhiflin attemped to rescue Alex but narrowly missed. Riven missed. Alex grazed one. Asbjørn slew the one who was attacking Riven. Ukhiflin missed. The last standing dogman fled from the onslaught. The party collected a crude scimitar, a mace, some polished stones that acted as currency, a fang necklace and the kindling that Riven and Alex had been cutting.
