Elemental Attunement
All creatures within the Fractured Skies have an elemental attunement. This attunement effects a wide variety of aspects of the creature, including what kind of magic they can manifest, physical features, and subtle influences on their personality. Creatures generally gain this attunement from their parents, and so, different species and cultures mostly share common attunements.
There are four main attunements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. A fifth attunement does exist, Nul, but this is extremely uncommon, and rarely manifests in sentient beings.
While most share the elemental attunement of their parents, children born on an island with a differently attuned Source Crystal can gain the attunement of the island, rather than their progenitors. This means that any race of the Skies can be born with any attunement, although generally, most maintain the historical attunement of their forbears.
Manifestation
The way a person's elemental attunement effects them varies from individual to individual. A fire attuned person may be passionate and bright, while another is hot tempered and easy to snap. An earth attuned person may be the picture of emotional stability, or lazy and dumb as a rock. A water attuned person may be exceedingly clever and gracefully elegant, or coldly cruel and darkly cunning. An air attuned person may be light of heart, tortured by endless internal storms, or be completely detached from reality. It should be stressed that these are only influences, predispositions at best, and by no means set in stone. Nor is this list anywhere close to being exclusive, and such emotional manifestations are widely varied. Individuals rarely fit so perfectly into these stereotypes, but across populations coloured by the same elemental attunement, subtle patterns do begin to emerge.
In beasts, monstrosities, and other non-sentient creatures the influence of the elements manifests even more strongly. Some animals breath fire, can fly despite a lack of wings, or sections of their body collect a rocky carapace. Others swell or shrink in size, grow wild in temperament, or otherwise gain strange powers from sudden influxes of elemental magic.
Those born with an attunement to Nul are are either visually distinct from all other attunement types or not at all. Sometimes they appear sallow, pale, close to death, sick, or visibly distressed. Other times, they appear completely normal, almost painfully mundane.
