Sky Serpent
Sky Serpents are one of the most common creatures that exist within the Fractured Skies. Commonly viewed as invasive pests, they are deadly creatures with long lifespans that can grow much larger than terrestrially bound snakes. They hover through the air without use of any physical means of propulsion, relying on a magical bladder charged with elemental magic to carry them between islands.
The Serpent Riders magically tame these creatures, and use their ability to fly to move between islands without the need of Sky Ships. Their association with Serpent Rider raids has further stigmatized these creatures in the eyes of most cultures.
Sky Serpents are widely seen as symbols of bad luck and change.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sky Serpents come in a variety of colours and shapes. Due to the hyper evolution common to the Skies, Sky Serpents that are only a few generations removed from each other can very wildly in form, pigmentation, and morphology. Serpents that find themselves in colder climates often develop warm blood and grow horns. Serpents that spend more time on Jagged Belts tend to grow longer and gain a dark brown pigmentation. The varieties are endless and it pointless to try and catalog them here.
Growth Rate & Stages
Sky Serpents can live upwards of a century, and do not stop growing until they die. Every time they shed their skin, a bi-annual occurrence, they get a little bit bigger. Around 20 years of age, they become large enough to ride, and as they get older, they're able to support more and more weight.
When Sky Serpents enter the final year of their life, they rapidly degenerate, getting slower, more unpredictable, and quicker to anger. Generally, they only let those that they are truly comfortable with near them in their final moments.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Sky Serpents are obligate carnivores and require a steady supply of meat to live.
