The Scions of Sobek

Although only tangentially associated with SHADOW, these sorcerers are useful tools for SHADOW. Their leader, Ka-Khemet, was a sorcerer who struck deals with numerous powers of the Black Land, from Set to the great serpent Apep. Set told him he would grant his wish, provided he corrupted the guardian crocodile Sobek into his service. Sobek was a benign deity, but not beyond ambition. He wished to have power equal to the sons of Ra, so he ordered Ka-Khemet to steal the Milk of the Sun, whose sustenance could elevate a demi-god to the status of the Eight Great Gods. In exchange for the milk, Sobek would lay a clutch of eggs wherein Ka-Khemet and his fellow sorcerers could place their ka, their souls. When the eggs hatched, they would be reborn as Scions of Sobek.   Ka-Khemet did as he was told, and stole the Milk of the Sun from the great temple of Ra. The theft of the milk attracted the notice of Heru-Ra, Prince of the Kingdom, and his good friend, Tan-Aktor, the sorcerer-champion. They interrupted Ka-Khemet’s ritual, defeated an army of crocodiles, and prevented them from feeding the Milk of the Sun into the mouth of the guardian crocodile.   A magical duel between Ka-Khemet and Tan-Aktor ensued. Ka-Khemet was the victor, but the duel weakened Sobek’s champion to the point where Heru-Ra could strike him down. Ka-Khemet and his guard were forced to flee their bodies, and their kas entered the divine crocodile eggs laid by Sobek, where they hoped to unite with the divine offspring and hatch with the power of gods. However, Tan-Aktor laid a curse on the clutch, preventing them from ever hatching. The Scions of Sobek were trapped within the eggs for eternity.   The cooperation between Tan-Aktor and Heru-Ra proved short-lived, replaced with eternal enmity. Millennia later, remembering the power the Scions possessed, the reincarnation of Tan-Aktor removed his curse from the eggs and allowed them to hatch. When they did, they indeed took the form of the Scions of Sobek, crocodile-headed sorcerers.   Sensing the presence of Tan-Aktor, the Scions immediately killed (and ate) the clone body that tried to negotiate with them. However, Overshadow told them of the existence of Heru-Ra as The Scarab, so the Scions next struck against their old enemy. They descended on Freedom City and used the Freedom League as their puppets, which led to the Scarab’s death. Once freed from their control, the Freedom League fought back, destroying all of the Scions except for Ka-Khemet and his two chief lieutenants.   Ka-Khemet fled to what was once southern Egypt (now the Sudan), where he enslaved several villages and had them build a hidden magical tower amid the swamps of the Nile. He began to search the world for magical artifacts, using a flying, cloaking pyramid as his base. Overshadow knows of Ka-Khemet, his whereabouts and allegiances, and it is not hard to get messages to his ancient enemy and manipulate his hatreds so that the Scions dance according to his tune. The Scions are, and will likely continue to be, a useful weapon in SHADOW’s arsenal.
