Historical Basis

Accounts written by enterprising scholars amongst the Beastfolk and the Dwellers go into great detail regarding this, but most of the more public records available throughout the Freelands discount their existence. Many such records written by Freelancers were lost and burned during the Great Rebellion, and any other such records were seized by the Holy Order of the Light and were lost to time. As for the Circlets themselves, no one has seen them in generations. Of course there are some scholars and adventurers who may hear a rumor of such treasures cropping up here and there, but if they ever actually found anything is anyone's guess.

Spread

These days most of the legends regarding the Circlets are by word of mouth, with Freelancers mostly interested in the monetary value of such treasures. The Dwellers and Beastfolk on the other hand seek to reclaim these treasures for historical and magical purposes, as the practice of making such artifacts has been lost to time and they wish to preserve or recreate such magicks for their people. Meanwhile the Holy Order of the Light and the New Bloods alike wish to smash and/or destroy these artifacts, as such treasures could possibly be a symbolic and literal threat to their hold over the Freelands.

Variations & Mutation

Though the scholars believe only certain Races and properly attune to these Circlets, loyalists and monarchists who wish to see the Old Bloods restored believe that attuning to and wearing a Circlet determines you to be royalty and have a right to challenge for the right to rule the Freelands once more. This belief is especially popular amongst those who want to see a Highlander King rise once more.

Cultural Reception

Considered mostly a fairy tale these days, or just another treasure hunter's death trap.

In Literature

Most written accounts are in either the possession of scholars amongst the Beastfolk or Dwellers, all others are more likely than to be burned by the Holy Order of the Light.

In Art

Ancient portraits and paintings of the Old Bloods depict these Circlets rather vividly, the ones that still exist mind you.
