The Highlander King

Qualifications

To attain the title, the previous King must die and his heir must be of Highlander blood and be an Aasimar. Historically there were a few Highlander Queens that were both and they ruled instead, but typically it was a King 75% of the time.

Requirements

Must be born from the blood of House Highlander, supposedly every single King of House Highlander and sometimes Queen was an Aasimar.

Appointment

When the previous King dies, the next eldest heir with the blood of the Highlander and an Aasimar must take the throne and accept the crown.

Duties

The King is a symbol of religious sovereignty and that the Gods themselves have blessed Humankind and the Kingdom of Man. So long as a Highlander, an Aasimar, sits upon the throne the Kingdom of Man will be safe.

Responsibilities

Their job was to oversee the eight Old Bloods, the Holy Order, and the commonfolk of the Freelands; this later evolved to overseeing the New Bloods and the reformed Holy Order of the Light.

Benefits

As King under a theocratic monarchy, he wielded absolute power over the Kingdom of Man. Traditionally the Highlander King left the Old Bloods, The Holy Order, and later the New Bloods to their own devices within their territories and only stepped in when it was absolutely necessary as arbiter.

Accoutrements & Equipment

They sat upon the Golden Throne within the Imperial City wearing the Golden Crown of the first Highlander King that was supposed placed their by Lady Bellona Albion herself thousands of years ago before the Great Revolution. They wore the finest of regalia and clothing, for they were a holy symbol of the King's divine right to rule.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Traditionally the King ruled until death and his eldest heir that was both Highlander blood and an Aasimar took the throne, however around 2000 years ago the Great Rebellion at the hands of the New Bloods and the rebranded Holy Order of the Light ended the line and broke the Kingdom of Man.

History

The first Highlander King lead the Great Revolution with his eight Companions who later became the Old Blood Houses and families. He then went on to found the Kingdom of Man and united the Freelands under his draconic banner, then his descendants ruled over the Kingdom of Man for around 2000 years. The Highlander Kings following this oversaw the creation of the Holy Order, the rise and promotion of the New Bloods, the transition of the Holy Order into the Holy Order of the Light, and eventually met their end during the Great Rebellion.

Cultural Significance

The Elves of Avalon saw the Highlander King as their greatest threat and a symbol of their animosity, they could turn their ire and hate for all of Humankind and the other "lesser" races by directing such negativity towards it. The other races of the Freelands saw it as a symbol of Humankind ruling over them much like how the Elves once did, true it was worse under the Elves but they still felt underfoot. To Humankind itself the Highlander King was like a tenth Deity to some and to others a symbol of too much power in one person, depending on who you ask.

Notable Holders

There have been hundreds of Kings in the 2000 or so years of history in the Kingdom of Man, but the most notable would the first who established the Kingdom and the last who watched it all fall apart and be destroyed during the Great Rebellion.
