Meix

The meix is one of three types of currency (collectively, colloquially, called the three hungers) used in Unenshuut along with the plevuud and siyravuud; it is not used in international commerce, but has equal numeric value to its two siblings. Its abbreviation is 'm'.   A meix is the tooth (of any size, though typically from 0.25" to 4") of a qurot, an amphibious reptile common to southern rivers of Unenshuut and Seyis-Gol, ivory in color. Sometimes a small hole is made at the base to enable stringing. It is exclusively used for 'soul goods' -- non-physical services, debts, or trades -- and is a nod to an old analogy of "pulling out one's own tooth should I not repay this debt to you"; in this way the tooth is more of a symbol of the spiritual payment and represents that the payee owes the recipient. Often, when the debt has been repaid the meix is/are returned.
