Stone of Testimony, The

The Stone of Testimony is a ritual item used by the Eyes when promoting members of the House of Leavings to other ranks.    It is worn smooth, head-shaped, relatively flat, and mottled yellowish-white in color; on one side are a pair of adult handprints, though it is not clear whether they were carved, impressed, or molded. The type of stone is also unique, though no significant study has been given to its composition. Its origin and any special abilities are unkown.   When promoting a member of a House, the member first removes their current shawl-collar (if applicable), which is typically burnt. Then a member of the Eyes holds out the stone to them and the member places their hands in the handprints. The stone-bearer states, “We have seen this. We welcome it as the next step. Though the way is yet dark, this small part takes us closer to the meaning.” Another member of the Eyes drapes the new shawl-collar around the shoulders of the Shepherd, and the stone-bearer states,  “This child is raised. Let them carry the title of Apprentice, and may their burdens be many but light. May all souls welcome their meeting, and may this child walk well in the way. The arcane waits for us all.”   The Shepherd is not required to look into the Ega during their promotion, and indeed most, when questioned, have stated that they have felt no change -- physical or otherwise. Due to the enigmatic nature of the Eyes, however, they are reluctant to say that the stone is purely symbolic.
