Chronicle 1: The Forgotten
Receiving $10,000 for a ten night sleep study seems too good to be true. And after waking up in an unfamiliar world, several strangers realize they might not get that money after all. Surviving in this foreign landscape will require their cunning, skills, and a lot of luck.
Welcome to the first campaign for The Gate Chronicles. This story is still in progress and is currently being developed and played by the Missing Roll Player Found podcast. You can take a listen to the first episode below:
Overview
This story follows the adventures of several modern day humans who get stuck in another world and time, let's just call it Eyrth. The game is played using the Pathfinder 1e system and characters begin play at level 1 on the fast XP track to level 5 and then medium after. There are several important concepts to understand with this world.
- It is deadly
- It is unforgiving
- It is gritty
If you find yourself enjoying these sorts of elements as well as bits of horror, mystery, and dread with touches of hope, then this might be just for you! Take a listen to the podcast and follow along as the world develops. And if you find yourself loving it, consider supporting the podcast and the writing process by donating to our Patreon. You can get access to the World Anvil modules and session notes as they are developed.
Important Details
There are several important factors that should be considered when attempting to run a game within the Gate Universe.
Laws of Magic
Magic exists within the confines of several factors.
It follows "the law of equivalent exchange," it is not widely used, and it can be dangerous for the user.
It is therefore important that the player and gamemaster work together to determine what exchange is needed for each spell usage.
For example, some characters might find that using spells with focuses or without components might cause harm, such as minor headaches or feeling ill. Other times, spells may require components.
Regarding Cantrips
While some classes have cantrips, it is recommended that a player limit their usage and roleplay to flavor reasons why they cannot be used constantly.
Currency
Most fantasy roleplaying games utilize a gold-standard system for their currency. In The Gate Chronicles this is not the case. Instead, gold is rare and silver is the standard.
For ease of use, gamemasters can simply exchange the word "gold" for "silver" when looking in the Pathfinder books for items.
However, if you are interested in using the actual currency system utilized in the podcast, you will simply need to Currency Exchange 2e values and convert player starting gold after initial equipment purchases.
You may notice that this system does not use platinum pieces, but has two additional currencies, "copper bits" and "crow." The copper bits are now the lowest form of currency, shifting the rest of the currency table up by one slot. Crow is the currency exclusive to the Seeker's Guild and is generally not accepted by countries outside of the guild's influence or reliquaries. It is a flavorful change that is highly recommended.
The Value of Things
On this Eyrth and time, it is important to consider the value of things. As previously mentioned, with many other TTRPGs using a simple gold system leads to characters lugging around large sums of gold or items of exorbitant price that don't make sense being valued as such. If you decide to keep with the original currency system of Pathfinder, that is perfectly fine. However, you will have to consider at least halving the prices of some goods if you use the Gate system's currency. If you have opened this spoiler and all you see is this text, then you're missing out on some dope information.
