The Field Guide
The Field Guide is a collection of journals, drawings, poems, maps, recipes, and more.
It was written by The Writer, an until-recently nameless entity as the entire document is written from his perspective. The Spiritual Travelers learned the name of this writer while in Tympi's House on Nurend 13, 308.
The journal entries follow his journey through the gates: from the path that he ended up on in the south all the way to a strange cliff in the far north. It details the strange friends he made and lost along the way, and the dangers that he faced with the hope of finding his sister and going back home.
You can read a summary of the journey through The Writer's page, or read the entire journal using the navigation buttons at the bottom of the article.
Purpose
The Field Guide was written as a sort of log regarding what The Writer had found in his travels with hopes of one day remembering the journey or showing Anise what he went through to find her. His apparent interest in wildlife also compelled him to attempt some drawings and details about the plants and animals he found along the way.
Historical Details
History
The Field Guide was first written by The Writer as he traveled through The Gates, however, it seemed to have somehow escaped the spirit world at some point to end up in the hands of Quince.
Quince utilized the document to learn how to build the gate into the spirit world. With the help of several masters of the arcane, nature and spiritualism he managed to find the coordinates that the gate should be built at. These masters accomplished this feat by tracing leylines in the world to a particularly concentrated point.
The Field Guide has since been entrusted to the Spiritual Travelers as they journey through this world.
Public Reaction
Being the work of a child, many scholalrs scoffed at the idea that such a gate could even be built, or that there even was a Spirit World for that matter. However, Quince was able to find a select few that would do the work necessary to complete his quest.
