The Magisterium

The organization that deals with the training, recruitment, and direction of almost all things magic-related in the Golden Empire.

Structure

There are two branches of the Magisterium, one on Andricum and the Eastern Territories. The Magisterium is led by the Grands; a collection of senior elected official in each school of magic. All Grands hold weight in the organization, but the Grand Enchanter of Andricum is the de facto highest held position.

Culture

The Magisterium is a serious organization dedicated to the practice and research of magic. Following strict rules and guidelines, the mages of the Magisterium are intensely focused individuals. Creativity often takes a backseat to practicality, and eccentric personalities are often treated as inferior.

Public Agenda

Maintaining control of the powerful magics in the world for the protection and betterment of life in the Golden Empire. Magic practiced outside of the Magisterium is not banned, but it is monitored in most cases.

History

During the early days of the Civil Trade Union, magic practice was unstructured and chaotic. Wishing to improve their abilities in magic as a whole, the Union formed a college and guild of wizards. After years of training in the college, wizards would be hired to research magic in the guild and practice functional magic in the field (battle wizards, spell casting to assist in construction, agriculture, etc.). After a time, the guild grew greatly in power and was restructured into the Magisterium.

Military

A division of Battle Wizards assist the Golden Empire military on campaigns. These wizards are seen as Practical Magisters, and are exempt from standard research reports. They do put into practice any new offensive or defensive spells that are approved for testing, determining their usefulness in the field.   The Auditors are not used as a military unit, but are essential in the defense of the Magisterium if needed.

Laws

A large list of minor rules is dominated by the core laws of the Magisterium. The basic outlines of these laws are:
  1. Obey the instructions of senior Magisterium members. This law applies to the most senior members; if a Mid-Wizard gives a recruit an order that conflicts with a High-Wizard order, the senior wizards orders take precedent.
  2. Seek the advancement of magic in all actions. Members are expected to contribute to the research and development of magic (unless they are on Practical Magister duties). Wizards tied to the Magisterium are expected to practice and research their main school of magic, and must send reports on their findings yearly. Any who fail to report or are found lacking in results are put under observation, and two senior wizards are sent with an Auditor to observe them for a period. Those who are seen as failing in their duties are either brought to the Magisterium building to undertake research duties there for a period of years or are audited, which results in the restriction of their magical abilities for a certain amount of time.
  3. Defend the Magisterium from all detractors. While practicing magic outside of the Magisterium is legal, any individuals who act contrary to the Magisteriums ideals are dealt with harshly. It is illegal to act directly antagonistically towards Magisterium officials, and they are punished under joint Magisterium and local laws. Those who get in the way of the Magisterium unintentionally or without malice are not often punished, but are observed and approached in attempts to dissuade their actions. Those who comply are often given a small boon, and those who don't are added to the List of Detractors. Detractors are monitored closely, and anytime they so much as straddle the law they are reported to the local authorities.
