Travek Jenassa
Usjalil Jenassa Travek
Jenassa is a member of Clan Travek of Tymanther, and her family's dedication to artistry and jewelry is never more evident than with Jenassa, who can be found flaunting fine bangles and bejeweled headresses at any opportunity.
Jenassa is a curious and capricious sort and at the first opportunity to strike out on her own she set off running almost immediately after she came of age.
Raised under the watchful eye of Dragonborn society in Tymanther's capital of Djerad Thymar, Jenassa frequently caused friction for her fondness for adventure and apparent disdain for tradition, these traits (luckily for her) made her an unattractive match for suitors from other families, not to mention her magical capabilities, which were both equal parts unpredictable and diabolical on certain occasions.
Even so, Dragonborn society has instilled a sense of honour in Jenassa, and she derides dishonourable conduct from anyone, regardless of their station be they king or peasant.
Much of this however, is a front that Jenassa maintains, and one perpetuated by her family to hide their daughter's shameful secret; Jenassa is a Spellscar, one afflicted with deformities by the wild and chaotic magics of the Spellplague passed to her blood, this also manifests as unpredictable magics bursting forth which she has little control over. These bursts are sometimes benign and relatively innocent, and other times can be malign and violent, the latter of which can bring across a fugue state in the young woman; Jenassa herself equates this to an out-of-body experience, as though one is simply observing while the body acts on its own. She is extremely careful not to let this slip for fear that she may suffer retribution.
Jenassa's family once held hopes of her marrying into one of the many other noble families to help strengthen ties between them, but this has been avoided due to her state as a Spellscar; talk of marriage alliances were had from a young age regarding her, however, when her affliction and powers began to manifest her mother, Arava, attempted to conceal it at first, in a vain hope to avoid making her daughter a pariah, unfortunately though this could not be hidden forever and her father, Artorius, discovered their secret. Jenassa's father determined to keep her affliction hidden away and sowed seeds to control the suspicions of the other families when he shot down any marriage proposals that came. With her family seeing her affliction and abilities to be too scandalous and dangerous to reveal, instead they perpetuated the front that she would be an unsavoury match due to her rebelliousness and capriciousness, a persona Jenassa readily adopted, being taught that it would be far easier than having to be seen as a dangerous freak.
Jenassa's relationship with her family was somewhat fraught, what with the necessity of keeping her condition secret it can come as no surprise that her relationship with her father and indeed some of her siblings had become somewhat distant, while she still felt affection for her father it seemed that circumstance would continue to stand in the way of the two reconciling. As much as Jenassa and her father never quite saw eye to eye she owes her faith to his early teachings; he himself being a follower of Bahamut he also introduced her to both Lendys and Tamara, indeed all she keeps of her father's is the symbol of Bahamut she carries, a connection, albeit small, despite the distance. Jenassa's sole confidant was her mother, who Jenassa admits always tried the best for her daughter despite the circumstances.
Upon coming of age Jenassa smuggled herself onto a merchantman's wagon and fled Djerad Thymar, travelling west making for the Sword Coast. On her journey she encountered the curious Tabaxi, Sips-Others'-Tea, and the two agreed to travel together...
Relationships with the party and recent history
Sips-Others'-Tea:
Sips and Jenassa travelled to Baldur's Gate and were first encountered by the Drow siblings Llolryn and Filzen Zauath attempting to gain entry to Baldur's Gate sans payment for the gate toll. Upon meeting the members of their future party Jenassa made a point of introducing Sips as her 'best friend', despite the two only having been acquianted for a tenday at that point. While the two may be relatively recently acquainted it is plain that the two share a powerful bond as though they've known each other for years, the two also often share in-jokes at others' expense, mostly Carrion's. When Sips realised he had unknowingly slain the Elven woman 'Rahima', the daughter of his former mentor whom he swore to protect, he was near inconsolable; Jenassa was the first to his side to comfort him, and upon Sips swearing a blood oath to correct his mistake joined Llolryn in swearing the self-same oath. Joined shortly after by the rest of the party, who also joined Sips' blood oath, Jenassa utilised her magic to manipulate the spilled blood into one swirling orb then splitting into six parts which crystallized into six small roughly teardrop-shaped crystals, Jenassa distributed the crystals to each member of the party as a symbol of their oath and kinship tying lengths of cord around each crystal so that they might be worn about the neck.Carrion Stinarsk:
Jenassa has been particularly tight-lipped about her background to the party, only giving snippets away, and even then, being somewhat economical with the truth with the notable exception of Carrion. The young Dragonborn had displayed an attraction to the Tiefling from as early as their first chance meeting in Osvarian's Fine Garments, and following Carrion formally joining the group the two began a short and awkward courtship, which it was plain to see the young Dragonborn was conflicted over, considering her affliction. During their journey to Elturgard and after a heart-to-heart conversation with Llolryn Jenassa requested Carrion meet her at midnight at a nearby lake she and Llolryn had visited earlier that day a mile or so from where the party were encamped. Upon meeting the confused Tiefling, Jenassa mentioned the tension between them but asked him not to act on it, for she was not a suitable partner for him, and it would be unfair for her to lead him on considering what she was. The Dragonborn sorceress then waded into the lake and removed her robes exposing her disfigured back, revealing her status as a Spellscar to him, making him the first individual outside of her own blood to know of her affliction, knowledge which at present still has only been exposed to two others; Jorg Ovaaz'enden, and the Candlekeep sage, Sylvira Savikas. While the Tiefling was at first taken aback, he quickly recovered and embraced her, beginning their relationship formally. Despite a brief and tumultuous preamble, Jenassa and Carrion appear to have a strong relationship which continues to deepen with time and experience, the Tiefling is often the subject of teasing by his partner who delights in his ever-flustered responses, and the two seem to be generally comfortable around one another. While the two have what seems to be a healthy relationship, they are not without their problems, and while Jenassa may delight in teasing him she is fiercely protective of Carrion, and has warned him against his recklessness on more than one occasion, most notable of which being after Carrion attempted to use an at the time untested power on a powerful devil while in immediate proximity to the beast seemingly without regard for his own safety. While the party dispatched the monstrosity, it was not without injury, and Jenassa was immediately withdrawn following the encounter, upon approaching her Carrion was interrupted by Jenassa's Mage Hand tapping him on the shoulder to grab his attention, upon turning back to Jenassa, Carrion was met with her hand striking him across the face. What followed was a tearful venting of the woman's fears at the potential of losing him and condemnation of his continued recklessness... Matters were tense between the two following this encounter, however, the two seemed to have reconciled by the time the party made camp in The Ashen Forest.Jorg Ovaaz'enden:
Jorg and Jenassa's relationship got off to a rocky start, as did many of Jorg's interpersonal relationships within the party, mostly on account of his methods. The two remained mostly distant until the party infiltrated the Vanthampur estate and encountered the plaguechanged victims the Vanthampurs held hostage. Upon encountering one plaguechanged man chained against a wall as though crucified and seeing the vacant tortured expression he wore Jenassa saw a reflection of herself, or at least, a reflection of what she could become... Jenassa asked the rest of the party to allow her and Jorg a moment and revealed to him what she already knew; that she and Jorg were both sufferers of the Spellplague's ruinous effects, though from differing circumstances. Jenassa and Jorg knew that the man was too far gone to be saved as he had lost his mind to the plague and the Vanthampur's torturous experiments long ago, Jenassa told Jorg that it was their responsibility to put the man to rest, that they owed it to him to do better. The two ended the man's suffering with a crossbow, and confirmed their conviction with one another to seek a way to wipe away all trace of the Vanthampur's experiments. Upon exploring the Vanthampur estate further the two discovered more victims who seemed to have been infected with some twisted disease that bore markers similar to the Spellplague, after learning what they could they destroyed what remained of the Vanthampur research, keeping only what they had recorded themselves. Upon the party's return to Baldur's Gate the pair discovered that many refugees seemed to be suffering from the same malady they observed in the Vanthampur estate's prisoners, the two examined a number of the citizens and passed on what information they could to the authorities, however, the two were skeptical about the implication of the sheer number of people in close proximity and how the infection might spread. The relationship between the two has strengthened with each experience and what was once a fraught relationship between them is now one of mutual trust and respect. The pair's coordination and cooperation would be put to the test when during their foray through the twisted monstrous maze of Liminglita Forest Llolryn was wounded by one of the trees drawing her into its roots and attempting to meld with her, upon learning of this revelation Jorg and Jenassa jumped to tend to Llolryn however they could, which first meant learning more of what had attacked her. The pair were forced to perform an invasive exploratory surgery on the Drow warrior's arm to discover the extent of the damage without the use of any form of anaesthetic or magic to lessen the pain. Following the events in the Liminglita Forest and the party being given a part of the corrupted dryad, Phebia, who had continued to live in Liminglita Commune despite her corrupted and twisted state, Jenassa agreed with the rest of the party that the possible repercussions of making use of the strange item entrusted to them by the Dryad could be terrible, and all agreed not to make use of it out of the fear of the repercussions and more importantly lack of trust over the corrupted Dryad's true intent. During their journey through the Obsidian Waves however, it was discovered that Jorg had decided to meld the strange living flesh of the Dryad with his own weapon, creating one horrifying living weapon from the two. Jenassa, horrified by Jorg's new toy and breaking the party's agreement argued with Jorg and attempted to strike at him to take the weapon, when Jorg attempted to extricate himself the Dragonborn woman lashed out with her magic in a fit of rage, prompting the rest of the party to step in as Jorg refused to defend himself. Jenassa transported herself away magically, however, by some twist of the strange magic at work within the Obsidian Waves found herself transported to a strange temple-like structure not far from their location, when the rest of the party arrived Jenassa & Jorg's disagreement continued, culminating in the disassembly of Jorg's abominable experiment and replacing its power source with something far less malign. The two's relationship became distant and strained for a time, however, when the party entered the secret research rooms of the now transformed Thavius Kreeg they discovered that they had been experimenting for some time around the Sword of Zariel, what seemed to be some manner of magically enhanced engineering of Carrion's abilities, and most importantly for Jorg and Jenassa, the Spellplague. The research pointed to more clues around the Bloodthorn Plague's creation, however, among the research notes the party discovered documents noting their next selected test subjects that they hoped would be arriving soon, Jorg and Jenassa. This revelation led to Jorg and Jenassa reconciling, considering that they had found themselves in the belly of the beast as it were, Jenassa reasoned that they couldn't afford to be divided and offered her hand in friendship, when Jorg accepted Jenassa pulled him into an embrace and told him that it was less about being angry and more that she was disappointed, with a final apology, Jorg and Jenassa resumed their relationship as friends.Llolryn Zauath:
Jenassa and Llolryn's relationship began somewhat distant, having been essentially placed under the Drow's supervision by the Captain of the Guard in Baldur's Gate in the hope the Drow would keep her out of trouble so that he might capitalise on the possibility of acquiring sexual favours from Jenassa. At first Jenassa held resentment towards Llolryn for this fact, this sentiment was compounded with the encounter of one of Llolryn's active contracts as a bounty hunter in a tavern the group visited. The battle which ensued almost claimed their lives, with Sips taking the brunt of the beating doled out by the man. In a moment of desperation Jenassa had tossed her coinpurse containing every coin she owned at the tavern's guards as a bargain to save their lives from the man and his thugs. While tensions were high in the moments that followed these sentiments were cooled when Llolryn gave a frank apology for endangering them and offered to repay Jenassa's lost coin, however, she did one better, and upon receiving payment for the man's bounty gave an equal share to each member of the group. Relations between the two still remained somewhat icy however, and did not improve when the group returned to the guard captain; Jenassa, having gotten cold feet, or perhaps having hoped never to need to make good on her original feigned attraction to the guard captain attempted to slip away but was made to attend the captain's summons despite her insistence on the contrary. Jenassa was herded away from the group and led to the captain's bedchamber where she then put a plan in motion to prepare a drugged meal to kill the man's libido and cause drowsiness, handily finished by the application of a sleep spell Jenassa left the captain's chambers in the early hours of the morning leaving a note to make the man believe they had indeed spent the night together. Jenassa then entered the sleeping quarters where the rest of the group lay to find Llolryn awake, the two conversed and while Llolryn stated it would have caused difficulties had she done so she apologised for not intervening, promising to act on Jenassa's behalf should the captain attempt to insinuate himself upon her again. The pair's relationship improved from there and as the two became more comfortable with one another their relationship deepened. Indeed it was during a frank conversation with Llolryn about not hesitating to live life and to be honest about one's own sentiments that Jenassa decided to seriously reflect and acknowledge her feelings towards Carrion which in turn led her to confess her feelings to Carrion and expose herself to hurt by revealing her condition, which thankfully ended fortunately for the pair. Upon discovering Llolryn's wound after their foray through the Liminglita Forest Jenassa was incensed at Llolryn's concealment of the injury all the while reminding others not to take risks, a fact she challenged Llolryn on and tearfully told her that she was angered that Llolryn chose to suffer in silence because she cared, because she considered Llolryn a friend and that all of the group were there to look out for each other because they cared too. As the group progressed it became evident that Llolryn's wound was worsening, and when Jorg and Jenassa attempted to learn more through an exploratory surgery, the two discovered a corrupted vine had taken root within and was spreading within her, draining her life as it went, unable to think of any way to help safely, Jenassa and Jorg were forced to let the vine remain. Jenassa was consumed with guilt over being unable to help her friend and with little concern for personal safety ventured outside with Sips to seek a corpse that had apparently vanished, seemingly as an ill-conceived form of penance for her failure. When the group encountered the corrupted Dryad, Phebia, where the Dryad emerged from a titanic tree in the centre of Liminglita Village (presumably the Dryads' ancestor tree), and conversed with the group, Jenassa negotiated with the being to remove the corrupted vines from Llolryn's arm. After some discussions Jenassa and the party succeeded in swaying the Dryad, but made a tenuous promise with the corrupted being, to reunite it with the source fo the corruption, taking a piece of her 'essence' a pulsating blob of viscera the Dryad violently pulled from her body along with them. While Llolryn had been freed from a slow death at the hands of the vine, she was still ailing when the party approached the city of Amduscias' Hearth. When the party treated with the Hag, Maggie, they agreed to venture into Lulu's mind, in order to recover her memories in line with their quest. During their journey through Lulu's mind they managed to recover her memories, however, shortly after Lulu disappeared and the party were faced by a monstrous creature, a sentient mound of flesh, the skulls of its victims protruding beneath its flesh, the party realised as the monster spoke that it was in fact the former ruler of Elturel and traitorous priest of Torm, Thavius Kreeg, now reborn as a powerful Devil. Kreeg wracked the minds of the party, and as they attempted to escape through a portal reached out for Llolryn, entrapping her within his grasp as her body became black smoke and was drawn into Kreeg, running up his arm to join the rest as Jenassa and the party looked on in horror. Upon passing through the portal, returning to Maggie's hut, the party discovered that Llolryn had indeed been killed, the party grieved for their fallen friend, and determined to destroy Kreeg, in the hope of restoring Llolryn to life, departed, but not before Sips spoke alone with the Hag and negotiated to leave with her body.Filzen Zauath:
Jenassa and Filzen have had a curious relationship from their very first meeting where almost immediately Jenassa seemed to make it her goal to tease the Drow, possibly out of curiosity to see what color Drow cheeks go when they blush, however, this relationship did not necessarily equate to closeness. The two began to grow closer after the group unknowingly slew Rahima Sajiressa, the Elven woman Sips had sworn to protect who had turned to Thavius Kreeg's side and attempted to kill the party. Relations between the two remained as they were until the group entered the Hells and when they made camp in a cavern within Liminglita Forest Filzen spoke of how he sought to make a difference and show that his kind were more than what they were perceived as. In response to Filzen's ruminations Jenassa stated that it sounded more like Filzen had something to prove to himself rather than to the world which triggered another round of silent thought from Filzen, however, the two have not had the opportunity to speak candidly in the time since.Lulu:
Jenassa and Lulu have a friendly and almost playful relationship, the two get along with little to no friction. Jenassa often refers to Lulu as painfully cute and other similar terms whenever the Hollyphant is out of earshot.Trivia
- While in Candlekeep Jenassa purchased a novel in one of the citadel town's bookstores, hidden away with some of the more raunchy offerings was a book penned by Lirchon Greenleaf, entitled 'A Horny Endeavour', this is a nod to 'Tusk Love' from the online D&D web series Critical Role.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Jenassa is extremely slight-of-frame for a Dragonborn, being comparatively skinny and wiry when compared to her kin.
Body Features
Carefully concealed by her multiple layers of robes Jenassa bears a wide area of discoloured, cracked, and deformed scales on her back in between which sprout short sharp quills, there is a faint glow of blue, which ebbs and flows like blue fire burning beneath the skin in the damaged tissue that runs between the scales, this glow flares with stress or when the woman pushes her magic to its limits. A deformity issuing from her status as a Spellscar and the source of her unpredictable Wild Magic, the deformed area runs from the below right shoulder and down towards the left hip.
Apparel & Accessories
Jenassa wears a mixture of teal and violet silk brocades which make up her robes, which she further decorates with various pouches and trinkets.
She carries a carved stone focus in the front pouch of her outfit. The focus is carved into the shape of a Dragonborn Egg and has been passed down through her family for generations. The Clan name is carved into the face of the stone in Draconic.
Personality Characteristics
Personality Quirks
Jenassa has a nervous tick of crossing her arms across her torso, her left hand gripping the right shoulder and the right reaching for her left hip, this is most likely a learned habit from her childhood, having been expected to keep her status as a Spellscar secret for both her family's status and her own safety.
An extension of this behaviour seems to be her hesitance for physical contact, presumably for the fear of her secret being exposed through touch, this seems to be a rational concern for indeed Sips had once laid a hand on Jenassa's shoulder without warning, only to receive a prick from one of the quills beneath her right shoulder, Jenassa supplied the best lie she could muster off the cuff, which seemed to at least slightly satisfy Sips' curiosity. The young woman's hesitance seems to persist, with the only exception being Carrion, and while she still displays some discomfort, it is markedly lessened the further their relationship develops.
Jenassa has a fascination with hands, palm-reading, and anything hand-related almost bordering on Cheirophilia, nothing gory though...
Relationships
Relationship Reasoning
Travek Arava has always been her daughter's most trusted confidant, if for no other reason than her drive to give her daughter as normal an upbringing as she could given her daughter's condition as a Spellscar. The two share a far closer relationship than Jenassa does with her father, even considering his absence due to his responsibilities as Clan-master.
Relationship Reasoning
While Artorius cares for his child, his efforts to keep her condition secret have inevitably driven a wedge between the two, what with the perpetuation of the front his daughter is a rebellious tearaway and the need for Artorius to present himself as the ashamed father making their relationship distant and difficult to reconcile, despite how much either party may wish it to be otherwise.
