The Divine Oathpact

The Divine Oathpact is an agreement sworn by the twelve Selenian Empyreans of the Lunar Court at the advent of the Third Age after the end of the Calamity Wars. It is physically enshrined atop the Godspire in the Halls of Firmament in the center of the Disc.    The Pact limits the direct involvement of the Empyreans on the Disc as well as assigning them different duties required for the proper functioning of the post-Calamity Wars Disc. It's exact contents are only known to the gods themselves, but it is presumed to include secrets on how to bind and control the Outsiders. The Divine Oathpact was drafted and is enforced by Pelor, the Dawnfather, as a means to prevent destruction on the scale of the Calamity Wars and to keep the Disc in the natural order designed by its winners. As such, it includes divine duties such as Pelor dragging the sun across the sky every day, Melora having to consistently create the ebb and flow of the tides, and Yondalla having to tend to the sanctity of the Halls of Firmament.   Unless required for the fulfillment of their duties outlined in the Pact, it is known to prevent the Empyreans from manifesting their full power themselves on the Disc. They are requried to enforce their ministry instead through the workings of their followers, priests and children, investing them with their powers as they see fit.   A popular nursery tale in the Cainsang Concord tells of Aedan the Thief, a mortal man who once tried to steal the secrets of the gods for himself and tried to break into the Halls of Firmament. The story has him find and read part of the Divine Oathpact engraved on great slabs of gold in the first room he enters; the divine might of the words and immortal secrets written therein immediately make him go insane. He is then cursed with immortality and made to walk the Disc for eternity as punishment for his transgressions.
