The Great Upper Battle

Long ago, when the upper realm was still new, creatures of all shapes and forms walked the lands, the race of demons included. Magic was abundant and as ordinary as leaves on a tree, but far more powerful than it had been in their homes. There were new rules, new limitations and many were tempted by its endless fruits.   Most inhabitants of the upper realms grew cautious of the growing magical abilities. It was clear that the upper realm was far more malleable and unpredictable than the lower realms. A spark of magic to summon an herb below might set an entire forest ablaze above. The rules were unclear and the outcomes dangerous. What scared them most was the influence these people exerted on thenon-magicals of the realm; hauntings, possessions, enchantments. The overpowering of another’s will had never been possible before, but suddenly it was commonplace. For those without magic in their own blood, it was impossible to protect oneself from it.   It was decided to close the ladder between realms and leave the upper lands to the non-magics while the magics retreated below. The enchanters, having grown strong in magic and in control, resisted, and a great battle ensued.   When Regna, queen of the silvers (a species of immortal fairy-like beings) took on the quest to seal off the ladder between realms, the Enchanter Godaris challenged her. With armies at their disposal, Regna with the forces of the lower realms and Godaris his enchanted mortals, they fought for days. Magic and arcane energy warped the land, causing shifts and changes that were frequently deadly in the course of combat. After much chaos and blood, Regna sealed off the realm by using her own magic, channeled through her staff of verity, but thus condemned the Orole Valley and other sites of concentrated arcane energy. These patches of land were forever marked by battle, tainted with the arcane energies of the lower realms. They are untraversable by mortals and immortals alike, but act as windows; Magic still seeps into the upper realm from these points, called Wandering Wilds .
