The Power of the Sea Berry
The Upper Realm only knows two seas. There is the Fantmal Sea to the East, past which there are known islands, but no one has traveled to the end of the ocean. But to the Southwest, there is the Torrid Sea. The Torrid Sea is known for its swirling waters and horrendous monsters, so has been left generally unexplored. Yet there is a myth from that Sea that have sent many into its watery grasp despite the horrors: The Sea Berry.
There is a fabled island in the Torrid Sea, said to be the site of Faldor’s birth (a prominent and cruel Magician of several generations back, who relied so heavily on magic for his evil deeds that the current anti-magic sentiments can be traced to have grown stronger in his time, and seized the popular opinion after his defeat). The legend says that Faldor, as a boy, had already shown great promise as a magic-user and earned an apprenticeship on his island at the impressive age of eight. One day, when his master had sent him into the small inland forest in search of potion ingredients, Faldor stumbled across a Sea-Berry bush (though unknown and unnamed at the time). He witnessed a wounded rabbit eat a berry from the bush and heal almost instantaneously, and thus knew the power of the bush. He took a basket of the berries home to his master, who was fascinated with them.
They discovered many different effects of the berry, from healing to strength to increased magical conduction. Faldor wanted to test the limits of the berry, to see if immortality and non-rune based magic were within its capabilities, but his master discouraged and prevented him. So, Faldor snuck into the lab one late night, ate a handful of berries, and was about to attempt a spell when his master intervened. Faldor got angry at being constrained, and in his anger, killed his master just by his thoughts. Still fueled by the berries, he cast a spell across the entire island to obey him, and thus began his horrible rule, which he spread to the main lands.
Faldor’s island has never been discovered, and some say that Faldor was born of the sea monsters themselves. The home of the berry has been lost, with some looking for the island and others searching the waters, thus giving it the name of a Sea Berry. The Sea Berry is believed to bring unimaginable power and ambitious individuals often go in search of it, but none have ever found it.
