The Barrier

The Barrier is a Taranthian colony that is really little more than a military outpost. Storms on The High Seas tend to come from the southwest, and The Barrier serves to break many of the more violent ocean storms before they reach Taranthia, Orahn and beyond. A largely barren chain of islands, The Barrier has little to offer the world, and it's inhabitants rely mostly on supplies from Taranthia to survive,
The capital of Wallpost is scarcely any more than a port to import supplies and a few military installations, yet here on the sheltered side of The Barrier groups of families eke out a meagre existence.

Geography

The windward side (i.e. the southwest) of The Barrier is practically a desert, thanks to the constant high winds and waves there is little but rock and barren earth.
Generally the archipelago is noted to have low craggy peaks and extensive shallows, making spotting The Barrier from a distance troublesome, and navigating towards it difficult as it is easy to run aground when approaching from the north or south. The entire island chain is spotted with sea-caves, which make it a haven for smugglers.

Ecosystem

Little to nothing grows on the south-western side of each island, and most plant and animal life is reserved for the north-eastern sheltered areas - and that is usually small and hardy.
