Skull Island

History

Legends tell of a mighty creature, taller than a mountain. His bellows could be heard from miles around, his steps would shake the earth to its core. Such a monstrous creature, he'd boast of his strength and his power. It's whispered that once he punched a mountain because it was in his way and he flattened it to the ground. So giant and strong was he that he believed he could kill a god. A preposterous boast and yet, he believed. In fact he believed it so much that he challenged the god of the ocean to a battle to the death, in hopes of gaining godhood. Angered by the very thought that a mere creature no more significant to a god than an insect would claim to have the strength to best a god, the ocean dwelling deity took him up on his words, and smote him where he stood. The giants body left to rot in the ocean.   It would take many years but eventually dirt and sediment would cling to the skeleton of the giant, creating a makeshift island from his corpse, and it wasn't soon after that residents would take up the land to colonize and call their own. However after only a few generations disaster struck. A meteor hit the island wiping out all but a few rocks and what appeared to be the invincible remains of the giant. It would take many generations more, before the impact of the meteor would affect the landscape and being around it. A strange swamp started to grow out of the meteor, almost algae in nature, and yet took the appearance of trees. The mountain that held the skull of the giant would seep a white substance unknown to any mortal before. This substance has no known affects on the body no can it be used as a material component for anything, however it is cold to the touch and so is often used to cool refreshments.

Modern History

Again, beings would come to claim the land as their own, however no mortal could quell the beast that was Bogmire Swamp. So inhospitable the conditions were with the insects and the predators that humans of the settlement would steer clear of the swamp entirely. Until one day a member of the Iphelele people greeted the dwellers of the island. Claiming to be looking for perfection and spreading their own. An uneasiness washed over the settlers of Skull Island, and relations with the swamp dwellers have been rocky ever since. The Iphelele on the other hand have a great relationship with the merchants of many continents providing exquisite dyes and arts. Pompous and proud though they may be the Iphelele understand how to make paints and fabrics unlike any other race.

Mutants

Skull Island is famous for its mutants, from the Iphelele people, to the strange algae like trees of Bogmire, many a strange specimen has cropped up from within its borders, however there is one prize that any merchant would kill to get their hands on. A strange beetle known as the Icarus Beetle. A large golden beetle that can carry upwards of five tonnes, is resistant to the heat, the cold and requires little to no food or water, an ideal beast of burden. However these beetles are rare and have yet to be successfully reproduced in captivity. To an ordinary citizen these beasts would appear to be a gift from the gods, to a merchant, they are a prize more valuable than any treasure, to the Iphelele, treasured comrades and thus the Icarus beetle is rarely sold or let leave the island.

Dangers

Skull Island is host to many dangerous predators, mostly lurking in the depth of Bogmire. Some can be found in the freshwater lake surrounding Skull Island. Odd fish like humanoids nest on a small rocky sandbank off the west coast of the island. Known to lure children and men to their deaths by entrancing them with songs these killers often appear in the guise of human women. And off the east coast of the island lay deep trenches in which strange mutated fish have come to call home. These fierce creatures live in the murky waters and prey on the passing boats and any small prey they can find. The skies are not much safer, as large vampire bats can be found swarming at all times of the day. As the sun never rises on the Impaled Planet due to the heavy cloud coverage these bats never seem to sleep. Flying from one tree to another they pick off small herbivores or children to devour in their nests. And beware an angry swarm as they will shred you limb from limb.

Atmosphere

Located inside the crater of a meteor the clouds get caught and stuck within the high hills of the outskirts of the island, this creates a damp and humid area, perfect conditions for a swampy environment. Bogmire thrives under these conditions and so to do its people. Constantly shunned under two layers of cloud coverage the light that seeps through onto the island is minimal and grants little visibility. As such the many inhabitants of the island often have great eyesight in the dark or other abilities that they rely on to hunt, such as hearing. The humans of Skull Island have adapted to the conditions well and have grown accustomed to the dark setting.
