The Daffles-Longtooth Conspiracy
When Viscount Willum Daffles, Mayor of Daring Heights, disappeared without a trace when the city was overrun by orcs, many thought he had either fled in disgrace or stayed and died on the battlefield. As a new council assembled quietly to replace him, people wondered if perhaps some or all of the council had taken the opportunity to get him out of the way to seize power, flinging his body into the sea near the portal in Faerûn.
The wildest theory though, is the one with Granny Longtooth. The strange witch at the Graveside edge of town on the border of the Feythorn Forest had long been a curiousity of townsfolk. It was said that she had incredible power - certainly the adventurers of Daring seemed to visit her often enough - though it was said that for all her crusty charm she was rotten to the core. One day her cottage vanished and instead stories flitted about that she was now a Feywild Queen, ruling some realm of her own, which seemed ridiculous.
What isn't ridiculous is that to the Material denizens of Daring, Granny and Daffles disappeared within a few weeks of each other.
So the theory is this: Granny had been here since before Daring - a wandering witch. When Willum Daffles arrived, she made a deal with him to help the city thrive in exchange for his soul, though as long as he remained in control of Daring, he wouldn't have to pay the price. When the city was overrun by orcs, he vanished because his time was up - and he was devoured by Granny completely. As for Granny herself, with Daffles gone the great price had been paid, and she could fly off to her next big target somewhere far away.
There are of course variants to this outlandish tale. Some say they fell in love and sold Daring out to the orcs so they could run away together. Some say that Daffles was rescued by the adventurers from Granny's clutches, and left quietly in the night - a shadow of his former self. Some claim Granny and Daffles must have been the same person, as they were never seen in the same place together, but surely Aurelia would have known? Some claim that Aurelia must therefore be Granny in disguise, continuing to rule this town to her own purposes. That's ridiculous though. Right?
