The Long Night

At the height of the winter solstice in the month of Godsnight, families will gather by their hearths, exchange gifts, mark the passing of another year, and stay vigilant all through the night. Someone in the house must always be awake during the Long Night, as it is said that this is the time that God and their saints will often descend to the mortal plane to visit the houses of the faithful. Families sleep in shifts, with bread, wine and salt laid out within sight of the front door should the Saints grace the house with their presence.    It is said that those born during the Long Night were delivered by the Saints themselves.

Components and tools

Bread, salt and wine are needed as offerings by the door in case the house is visited during the Long Night.

Participants

Typically, the head of the household leads the rites, but any family member can participate so long as they do not fall asleep during their chosen watch.
