Banteavan Culture
The predominant culture in Banteave, the Banteavan is an amalgamation of both Antari Highlander and Norvalled that has fused together over the centuries since the Invasion of the Norvalled Raiders.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
The Banteavan people predominantly speak the Banteavan tongue, though some have managed to add a little Antari into their dialect to better trade with their northern cousins.
Culture and cultural heritage
Carrying on the traditions of their Norvalled ancestors, Banteavans still practice rites and rituals during Godsnight to symbolize the turning of the ages, though their summer fetes and faires incorporate old traditions inherited from their Antari Highlander ancestors.
Common Dress code
Wealthy Banteavans favour cloth, silk, linen and furs, and import a variety of dyes from the Continent to ensure they can always present themselves in a vibrant array of colours. The common Banteavan has less choice, and often makes do with roughspun tunics, breeches and cloth shoes.
Art & Architecture
The Banteavan noble houses funnel a great deal of wealth into building stately symbols of their power, and so the lands of Banteave are dotted with castles new, aging or defunct. Stone, brick, thatch and timber are the primary materials for construction in Banteavan lands, from the lowlieset shack to the mightiest citadel.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Funerary and Memorial customs
In accordance with the Six, the bodies of the dead are returned to the Earth. How ostentatious the grave is depends entirely on the individual being buried and what they can afford. The greatest heroes and most celebrated of nobles are buried in The Gardens of Valor. Commonfolk will often get a simple plot in the churchyard with a small headstone or wooden marker. The destitute receive a shallow grave off the side of a country road.
Common Myths and Legends
Banteave was founded by Alaric Bantevar , and many myths have sprung up surrounding the Invasion of the Norvalled Raiders that lead to the kingdom's creation. Of course, many of the darker details of Alaric's subjugation of the Antari people are glossed over or omitted entirely from the retelling.
Historical figures
Alaric Bantevar is said to be the first "True Banteavan," as he founded The Kingdom of Banteave and brought all his Norvalled raiders with him to settle these lands.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
Highborn or wealth Banteavans aspire to unblemished skin, clean hair, vibrantly coloured clothing and jewelry adorned in silver and gold.
Gender Ideals
Banteavan culture makes no distinction between sexes when it comes to matters of war, politics or employment. Any gender can serve as a knight or a squire, lead a warband or a barony, or take the cloth and serve the Church. Inheritance and succession laws do not consider gender when determining which child receives titles upon the death of a landed lord or lady.
