The Lowlands

The southern Lowlands of Banteave are a collection of moors, lakes, forlorn hills and blighted heaths. The southern coast is an array of forgotten fishing villages and bandit hideaway, along with the occasional safe haven for Ostamber pirates and smugglers. Travel is slow and treacherous, with the terrain proving almost as threatening as the hardscrabble highwaymen lurking in the fens, waiting to strike.  Life in the Lowlands is a tough affair, made tougher by the taxes levied by the Kingdom of Banteave. Resentment towards the crown is common here, and at least one Pretender King has risen up from the Lowlands in a bid for power, only to be struck down into the mire. The Duchies of Brackwater and Duskmoor oversee the region, ruling with a firm hand to keep the Lowlanders in line... but sooner or later, a pile of dry kindling always attracts a flame.

History

During the Invasion of the Norvalled Raiders centuries ago, the Lowlanders didn't warrant a great deal of attention from Alaric Bantevar. He dispatched a cadre of his best raiders to assess the people of the Lowlands, and their potential to complicate his conquest of the wealthy Heartlands. The reports soon returned with favourable news; the Lowlands were peopled by an offshoot of the Antari clans, and had long looked upon the lands and cattle of the Heartlands with great envy as the Antari Heartlanders crossed the great river to raid them yearly. Alaric's men promised the Lowlanders that they would be spared the conqueror's sword if they bent the knee to Alaric, and in return they would be protected from Antari raiders that had plagued their lands for generations. The Lowlanders accepted, and forsook their ancient ways. In exchange, Alaric granted them lands and holdings closer to the Camembi river, which would one day become the baronies of Brauden and Tull.
