Meyland Council
The Meyland Council, also known as the Holds of Meyland, are a tight-knit collection of five city-states that have established themselves and solidified power over Meyland for generations.
The oldest and most powerful hold is the Silver Kingdom, established two centuries after the War of Broken Chains, when the first freed slaves of the Ak'teshi Empire settled the continent of Meyland.
Since the Silver Kingdom's dominance over Meyland, city-states have sought independence from the kingdom over the centuries. While some of these secessionist ideals were fought for through long, tiresome battles, most were fought for diplomatically. Today, rather than securing dominance by top-down dictates and risking the specter of civil war, the Silver Kingdom maintains power over Meyland by granting a certain amount of freedom to the holds as vassal states. While they are free to pursue their own goals, all have pledged allegiance to the Kingdom.
Each hold has carved out its own invaluable niche within Meyland. The township of Cliffspire has enabled Meyland to become closer trade partners with the Karthan Commonwealth, solidifying an alliance with both nations. Its current mayor is Lord Sarrus Talenwood. Ansmorth provides Meyland with its much-needed supplies of lumber and stone under the leadership of Lord Baron Darion Rainsley. Dunmeril, part of the halfling territories lead by Thain Brayla Dale of the Kinston Council, is Meyland's breadbasket. Port Morkney has established itself as the main port and trading hub for the wider world, bringing in exotic goods from distant lands. Its governing body is the Morkney Council, under the leadership of Mayor Abigail Leyissa.
The Silver Kingdom provides the nations' security and armed forces. While all the dwarven holds are ruled by Kings and Queens, all pledge their allegiance to the High King, Bratorr Jornmire. While Meyland is considered a monarchy, the powers of the crown are limited by the Meyland Council, a collection of hold leaders who vote on legislation and judicial matters. The High King may override certain decisions by executive authority in times of emergencies or exterior threats to the nation.
Recent events have put Meyland's security into question, and as such, the High King has allowed the Commonwealth to bolster Meyland's armies with their own forces, causing some holds to become skeptical of Meyland's unity.
