Realm of Insanity

The Realm of Insanity is a plane of madness situated within the Outer Planes. This maddening realm is feared for its power to twist unfortunate visitors into gruesome monsters. Very little is known about the Realm of Insanity beyond personal accounts of foolhardy planeswalkers, corroborated with ancient texts.   The Realm of Insanity comprises five layers of existence. Unlike the layers of many Outer Realms, these layers are very thin and sometimes overlap. Each layer has its own strange landscapes and creatures that roam them. To witness multiple layers overlapping in one place would be to tear one's mind asunder.   On the whim of the alien entities that drift through them, the layers continually evaporate, divide, spawn, and breathe. Changes in the elemental and energy traits of the layers continuously occur, creating the equivalent of a storm.   Within the Realm of Insanity, landmarks and entities are multidimensional, existing on multiple layers at once. Convex shapes may in fact be concave, and perspectives may be forced to shift.   The Realm of Insanity is full of bizarre scenes that pass for wilderness. Strange blue globes rain down from unseen heights, bursting when they strike something and unleashing horse-sized ticks that immediately scuttle away to hunt for blood. Gelatinous worms crawl through the layers. Forests of writhing tentacled vegetation encrusted with orange moss, growing above an amoeba-like sea. Obelisks of living flesh shiver at one's presence and barren wastes gaze back with infinite eyes. The Realm is also home to a number of creatures of all shapes and sizes collectively called Aberrations, each as mind-bending in appearance as the last. Some are bestial, others are humanoid, but all belong to the Realm of Insanity.   Gravity and time do not exist in the Realm of Insanity as mortals know them, and are relative to one's own perspective. It is possible to glimpse future echoes of one's self, forever trapped in the nightmarish landscapes of the Realm. Other times, one may find one's self walking what was once a cave ceiling.   These five layers have no names as of yet, for such knowledge remains beyond mortal reach, but what is known is that each layer is a realm unto itself, each ruled by five Old Gods, timeless, eldritch creatures ruled over one greater consciousness.   At one point near the formation of the world during the Primeval Time, these five Old Gods ruled over the the Known World with five expansive empires, each seeking to remake the world in their image, until they were defeated and imprisoned in the Realm of Insanity by the four Elemental Titans of Earth, Fire, Air and Water.   It is still in debate whether these realms are the Old Gods themselves or if they are separate entities. Each of these Old Gods constantly vie for control over one another, and each have their own following of Aberrations spawned from them as children, but all have a common enemy in the Infernals.
