Orod Ladwen (City)

Orod Ladwen is an ancient city and former capital of the Tawarian Gnomes before their defeat in the war with the humans 500 years ago. After the war, the city slowly became uninhabited and fell into ruin.   The city of Orod Ladwen was built at the base of the Tabletop Mountain on the banks of the Luk Son River.   After Capt. Marlow and his company of Rangers defected from the Märchen Forest, they fled north into Tawar and settled in the ruins of Orod Ladwen, eventually rebuilding parts of the city. In recent years, the city has grown considerably in population due to an influx of Tawarian gnomes returning to their old capital as well as a large number of Creatures of the Old Forest who have fled Märchen to escape recent pogroms.   Orod Ladwen is the current headquarters of the Posse Liberatus.

Demographics

In order of most prevalent:
  • Human (primarily former Märchen Rangers and Tawarian humans from the surrounding jungle)
  • Tawarian Gnome
  • Creature of the Old Forest / Fey Folk
  • Other humanoids (dwarves, orcs, halflings, etc.)

Government

The city is run by a council called the Aeldur. This group is made up of representatives from each of the main wards of the city. However, much of the city is maintained and managed by the Posse Liberatus. Capt. Marlow is both the head of the Aeldur and leader of the Posse Liberatus.

Infrastructure

During its time as the capital of the Tawarian Gnomes, Orod Ladwen was known for its innovation in the use of magical machinery (mekanitry) and steam hydraulics to power many of the city's central features, such as its underground tram network, use of Vox Bestia, running water, and plumbing.   Like many gnommish cities, Orod Ladwen has very few straight lines: streets are winding, buildings are circular with domed roofs and have round doors and windows.   At center of the city is the Forum. Before the fall of Orod Ladwen, this was the seat of Aeldur and center of government for the Tawarian Gnomes. Since, the rebuilding of Tawar, the forum has once again taken up its place as center of the city's politics and houses the reestablished Aeldur as well as the offices of Capt. Marlow and the Posse Liberatus.   Surrounding the Forum are the city's six main wards: The Garrison, Merchant Quarter, Rock Bottom, Little Märchen, Mossy Log, and The Grove.
