Session 40: Lament for Finn

Written by ethancochrane

General Summary

After dispatching the Bugbear force and a lone Nothic, the heroes had entered the druid halls. They encountered three sepulchres at the end of a long central hall, and at the foot of a cast iron throne. The Libre Mortis, a tome of abject evil found, both found and lost (see Session 14: Argus Defeated! Report), stood on an iron stand next to the seat. Brimble Knackles used his pot of Nolzur's Paints to breach a sepulchre and a freshly undead creature burst from the coffin. Wearing druid robes and murderous intent in burning yellow eyes, the creature ran from the room, past Brimble and without care for the arrows and bolts the party slung. As the heroes chassed her, the creature took an eastern passage to a circular room and stepped upon a magical lift that transported her to some unknown depth. Perhaps the heroes will see her again. Back in the central hall, his paints at the ready, Brimble created a wooden and lead-lined box to hold the book and entrusted it to Mi'tsuru'gi.   The party spent an hour investigating the corridors and rooms on this level. Everywhere a thin layer of fungus on walls cast a weak purple hue and small mushrooms dotted the corners of corridors and rooms. A library at one end held ancient books on the natural history of Cullen Drae, its swamps and fens, and a few books on necromancy, these seemingly the subjects of recent perusal. Notes on a table recorded recent events including "...experimenting with Karlena, but she died. Baron, partially successful, just a few more hours needed perhaps...". Mitsu, disgusted with the place, threw a torch into the bookshelves and they began to smolder and smoke with a pitiful fire. The faint smoke of which moved across ceilings and out the entrance to the druid halls.   An adjacent room revealed a plain chamber but with the far wall a solid surface of shimmering red light. A pebble tossed into the surface came back out as if a mirror image. None of the adventurers desired to see more and the door was closed.   Another narrow corridor contained a series of doors which seemed to be cells, for prisoners or visitors from ages past. As Finn and Rivine investigated, a Gelatinous Cube suprised the dwarf and engulfed him. Rivine was able to free Finn as others fired arrows into the ooze, but the cube advanced and engulfed Finn again. The acid of the cube proved too much and the poor dwarf succumbed to a common fate for dungeon delvers. Mitsu's next arrow destoyed the creature. Finn's remains were placed under some stones in the entry cavern. Brimble then investigated the cells and found words scrawled near the floor: "Cullen Drae I have failed you. Long live House Cullen. P down. N up"   To the east, in the footsteps of the undead creature, several rooms branched off the corridor, a kitchen (recently used), a storeroom, and some bed chambers. Brynnwythlinmardcaladog , entering one of these chambers happened upon a group of humanoid mushroom creatures, Myconids! These normally passive denizens of caverns and caves attacked the bard and he, along with his companions, sliced with sword, riddled with arrow, and made sure the Myconids would infect no more.   Seeking a place to rest, the companions returned to the central hall, but before tending to wounds and bandaging joints, Rivine found a secret entrance to a room below the iron throne. Rings in the wall led to a small room with chests and sacks at the far end. Brynn ventured down and began to investigate the floor of this likely treasure chamber and after 20 beats of the Bard's heart, two Flesh Golems smashed through light wood walls at the chamber rear, painted to look like stone work. Brynn was quickly outmatched and he suffered smashing blows from the monsters before he was able to escape. Not knowing what to do, the hereos threw burning draperies and other combustibles down into the chamber and bured the reanimated part-men to their (second or third?) deaths. Unfortuantely this seemed to destroy many potions and elixrs in the chests, leaving the party with coppers and other more worthsome coins. The smoke from these fires also passed along the ceilings drifting out of the dungeons and up, one assumes, to the the surface of Shaeje where keen eyes might be watching the entrance to the druid halls and the current site of the Libre Mortis.
