The Last Gleaming
April 18, 1776
The struggle for independence has many faces. For some, it is self-government while for others it is no government at all. For some it is just minding your own business, tending your own garden, and keeping out of the way of the rich and powerful.
But after Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, the Siege of Boston, it is not a struggle for words in the parlor, it is a battle for survival between the colonies and the most powerful land and sea forces in the world. General Washington came to New York City a week ago, April 14, 1776. Everyone knows the hammer will fall here. A large part of the city's population, second largest after Philadelphia, have packed their bags and moved inland. New York City is surrounded by water. It is the last gleaming.
